Does the Cub organization "owe" Derrek Lee?

Probably not much at his age. As much as I like him, and would like to keep him, the Cubs have no reason to go out and offer him more than his worth just because of what they've given other players... Usually, the market has dictated the money. There was another article this morning about the market for 1B, and there are very few teams that aren't set at 1B, outside of Boston and San Francisco. San Francisco would probably be his best option in Free Agency... I'm sure Sabean would gladly hand out $15mm per year for a 35 year-old.
I could see them making a run at Lee for sure. The Giants always go after the aging superstar, and usually it works for them. You can look no farther than their signings of Moises Alou, Randy Johnson, and Omar Vizquel.

If by "works for them" you mean doesn't work for them I totally agree.

All three of those guys you listed were underwhelming. Alou was decent when healthy but he was hurt a lot. The Giants haven't been any good since Bonds left.

I don't think they were bad signings at all. Alou wasn't healthy and missed roughly 1/2 to a third of their games, but he produced when we was fit.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

QUOTE (Nick Cafardo)9. Derrek Lee, first baseman, Cubs: If the Cubs could move him, they would, according to multiple scouts. The 34-year-old first baseman is in the final year of a five-year, $65 million contract, earning $13 million this season. The Cubs are looking to shake things up, but a taker for Lee will be hard to find if teams feel his bat is slowing. Lee also has a no-trade clause

I am not ready to start the firesale yet...however, if this team is still struggling and underachieving on July 1st, I think Ricketts should start making some changes. First, I would fire Lou and make Tram the interim manager or Ryno. Second, it would be time to start moving whoever we could. If we could move Lee for some prospects, do it, if we can move Fuk, do it, A-Ram, do it....same goes for Lilly, Dempster, and whoever else we can move. This team isn't going anywhere and things aren't looking up. It is time to start thinking about wholesale changes!

It can't be Ryno now unless you're willing to burn him. If you need to move Lou out, you either need to jettison Hendry at the same time or go with an interim manager. An owner doesn't (or shouldn't) control player, managing or coaching personnel. The GM has to hire the manager and if Hendry isn't long term, you shouldn't saddle the next GM with the last GM's guy. So Hendry goes first...or Hendry and Lou both go, or Lou goes and an interim manager comes in. Tram is perfect for that role. And if he's some sort of untapped genius, he saves Hendry's job and can be offered a contract. If he's not, a new GM comes in and makes his own choice for manager...and anyone interviewed for the GM job will be made aware of Ryno's being groomed for the role.

Ryno needs at least a year up in MLB as a bench coach, 3rd base coach, whatever. The vibe in big-league clubhouses have changed a whole lot since 1995, and he needs to let it soak in for a year.
Obviously Trammel is perfect for interim guy. Lou is as done as Griffey.

As for GM....why Ricketts is putting off the single most important move since buying the Cubs is beyond me, but perhaps if we keep losing , he'll come to his senses.

Why is Griffey falling asleep in the clubhouse being treated as anything other than humorous?

Because it's just the icing on the cake for him. He isn't playing badly...he's playing terribly. It was OK for the M's to bring him back for a little nostalgia, and to sell a few tickets last year, but last year (and the previous 2 or 3 years) he sucked. It was clear that he was completely, utterly done as a ballplayer.

Now, he can't even stay conscious during games? You're telling me that isn't news? Keep in mind that he's one of the most popular, and truly great players of our lifetimes. He should just know that Father Time has spoken.

Anyway, any Cub move (like trading DLee or putting Lou out to pasture) is merely changing deck chairs on the Titanic. Cut the head off.

Can't fire Hendry unless the right replacement is ready to step in.
