How did this happen?? There was no reason before the season to think he'd be anything but good.

The only rumor that I'll comment on was the one already reported regarding the bowling alley. Supposedly, he had been there drinking solo for over 6 hours.

Or maybe he's just not that good. Before the season a bunch of people were penciling him in as the #4 in our "really solid rotation" and were heatedly arguing with anyone who suggested he might regress. I just don't see how anyone can be surprised with him sucking.

The list of young Cubs SPs who had good rookie seasons and were never heard from again 2 years after the fact is long and depressing. I'm not saying that there aren't exceptions to this once in a while, but to have faith in a guy like Wells after only one partial season was a bit premature. Plus, his stuff is very underwhelming.

Wells has had 2 terrible starts. The Cardinal game when he gave up the 6 runs (5 ER) in 0 innings and the Pirates game where he gave up 7 runs (6 ER) in 2 innings.

The Cards game was a day game. The Pirates game was a night game. Otherwise, Wells can suck just as badly at night as he can in the day.

Without those craptacular games, he's ERA becomes a near respectable 4.14 which is fine for a No.4/5 pitcher making the league minimum.

The problem, the Cubs can't get rid of those games and it appears that Wells seems just as likely to give up a win in the first inning as pitching a quality start.

Let's not twist words here. I think there was a few select people that "knew" Wells would regress and a few select people, including me, that felt if he could utilize his pitches correctly and locate well, he could be a solid to good pitcher. Personally, I don't think he's utilizing his sinker as well as he did last year. Maybe it's because the league has figured him out.

Bottom line is, it's lame to bring up told-ya-sos. Even more so when you slant it by saying things like "heatedly argue", "suggest", and "<i>migh</i>t regress" when trying to convey the emotion of each side of the argument.

Yeah, I don't know if anyone expected him to match last year's performance of a 3.05 ERA, but I didn't think it improbable of Wells to put up a sub-4.25 ERA this year.

I don't think anyone was saying with 100% certainty that Wells would suck, but it seemed that every time someone brought up the possibility that he still wasn't a sure thing, drama would ensue.

I don't get this perception. I was probably the biggest Wells proponent and I searched for key word Wells with my name. This is the strongest statement I could find in my own words.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->even if you aren't a believer in Wells, he should put up a sub 4.50 ERA which isn't bad for a number 4. I just think shit-tastic is going a little too far IMO.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

BTW, shit-tastic was a word another poster used to describe the Cubs rotation as a whole, not specifically Wells.

Maybe, but I'd rather see if someone like Cashner or another more promising young SP, hell maybe even Gorzelanny, could step in and show me something for the future. I don't care about this season even in the slightest, but I'd like to see what else we have for next year and beyond. I don't see Wells having much of a future at this point.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Not even comparing the two..but in a Bob Gibson interview I once said he said the thing that helped him out the most was that in his second season his coach told him "you will be pitching every 5 days no matter what". Point being that he had the backing of his coach regardless(up to a point I suppose) of results to work his shit out in the majors.

Imo, i would let wells pitch the rest of the season, at this point the team is looking at who can be counted on for the future. If Lilly or Silva or even Z now get traded this season I am sure we will see cashner get some starts.

Its not like Silva and Lilly are the future of the organization... Wells might or might not be in the rotation of the future, but id rather find out now that this season over...
