Castro being called up?

Usually, if the Cubs make a move I don't like, I will not post. I don't like to be essentially predicting bad things. I also don't look as stupid when I am wrong.

He looked way more comfortable defensively today, and that play he made on Hanley's soft liner was a terrific one that few shortstops have the range to make.

So, I read somewhere that Castro will not be a Super Two player (i.e., he won't have enough service time this year for it to count as his first service year because he won't be in the top 17% of playing time for guys with 2 full years of service time), but how are people coming to that conclusion?

Fontenot was the last Super Two player this year, and before his first two full years he had just 93 games of experience. Castro's gonna have way more than that, assuming he stays on the ML roster in 2011 and 2012.

Are the people who say he won't be a Super Two just wrong? Or am I missing something?

I can only guess the people that are saying that are assuming all the rookies from this year will stick in the majors and that would put Castro outside of the 17%. Nobody will know for sure for two off seasons.

You're right - definitely shouldn't "worry."

A part of the total consideration, particularly if a couple weeks could save the team millions down the road? Yes.

I'm extremely pleased by Castro's plate discipline. That was the biggest concern for him coming into this year. He took 10 walks in 120 PAs at AA and now has 4 walks in 28 at bats at the major league level. Just watching him bat, he seems to have very good pitch recognition and doesn't swing at pitcher's pitches unless he's trying to protect.

Doesn't really matter how many games he played, it matters how long he was on the roster. Fontenot had 2 years 139 days, which was the exact cutoff.

If Castro stays up all year he will have just about exactly 2 years 138 or 139 days (not exactly sure how all-star breaks figure into the days) so he will be very close. In the past 5 years no one with less than 2 years 130 days has been super two, so had we waited 2 more weeks he would have pretty much been assured of not being one. Now it will be very close. I have also read there are a lot of good rookies that started the season up this year that have a good chance of staying up so it might be a good year for Starlin as the Super 2 cutoff may be unusually high for his year.

In general I agree with Coach though, if he helps bring him, The Cubs shouldn't be worried about Super 2. If he goes down to the minors for any reason for any period of time over the next 3 seasons we won't have to worry about it anyway and if he doesn't, then that probably means he has been raking and we won't mind paying him 3 mil or whatever a year early.

I know we ended up scoring 2 insurance runs in the 9th, but that defensive play is one that we have been needing lately.

Theriot wouldn't have gloved that ball, much less gotten the throw anywhere close to throwing him out.
