Hanley Ramirez
#1
What do you guys think of his deal?

To paraphrase what took place yesterday:

In his first at bat, Ramirez hit one off his ankle. In the 2nd inning, with runners on 1st & 2nd, Abreu hit a soft pop up that Ramirez flubbed then managed to kick about 100 feet. Ramirez slowly jogged to get the ball and allowed Abreu to go all the way to 3rd. Abreu later scored on a single.

After the inning, Florida's manager pulled him from the game for going half-ass. After the game, Gonzalez singled Ramirez out for his lack of hustle saying "“Hanley left the game because we felt—he got smoked in the ankle—but we felt whether he was hurt or not hurt or whatever it was, we felt that the effort wasn’t there that we wanted,” Gonzalez said. “There are some injuries there, but we expect an effort from 25 guys on this team and when that doesn’t happen, we have got to do something.”

Today they've gone back and forth <!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->“It’s his team. He can do whatever,” Ramirez said, mixing in an expletive. “There’s nothing I can do about it.”

“That’s OK. He doesn’t understand that. He never played in the big leagues,” he said.

Responded Gonzalez: “He’s right, but I know how to play the game.”

“I played six years in the minor leagues and I know what it takes to play this game and I know the effort it takes to play this game,” he said.

It seemed unlikely Ramirez would say he was sorry.

“We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls,” he said. “They don’t apologize.”<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I got nothin'.

What do I think? I think Ramirez would make a much better Cub than a Marlin. He can come here and be lazy every once in a while at second base and then at third after ARam's contract is up or he opts out.

He will make a nice Yankee once Jeter retires.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->When initially asked Tuesday about Gonzalez's benching him, Hanley answered: "Who?"

Fredi, he was told.

"Who's that?"

Your manager.

"Oh, yeah..." he said.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I lol'd.

Yep

I watched both plays and on the grounder afterwards and on the play in question Hanley had a pretty significant hitch in his giddyup, no doubt he was hurting; also take into account he is your one and only superstar, probably not the brightest thing in the world to pull him, show him up and then tell the media about it afterwards. Fredi should realize, he is a lot more dispensable than Hanley.

Was he half-assing it a bit? yeah, but both runs would have scored anyway, the one difference is maybe he holds the runner to 2nd instead of 3rd.

I'm not condoning slacking off and I love guys that always hustle, but this was a pretty minor thing considering what goes on in baseball these days and the trainer said his leg was very tender. Seems like a case of Fredi power-tripping trying to show he is in charge of everyone. Had he just called him in the office after the game and said, "look I expect hustle, if your too hurt to hustle, tell us and we will take you out" that would have probably served the purpose and done a lot less damage.

The Marlins sure have their share of superstar/problem-child types. (Miggy Cabrera, now Hanley).
The thing is, even though it pains me to say it, a manager has often got to use a double-standard. It sucks. It's not fair. But life is not fair.

Hanley Ramirez is the single most valuable Marlin by a country mile. He's probably one of the 5 most valuable players in MLB (Mauer, Pujols, Utley...who else?).
I get the feeling that he's a little bitch. But, you know, most superstars are not in the mold of Ryno/Maddux. They usually expect and demand special treatment. As I said, it kind of sucks.
And if Hanley truly dogging it, then he has to be called out. But if it's borderline, I don't know.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

The pulling him, I guess I understand. Especially if he was legitimately dogging it as opposed to being hurt. But to go to the media with it was career suicide.

Gonzalez could just as easily have told Hanley in private that his dogging it was unacceptable while telling the media he was pulled for injury. That's how, you know, adults handle things.

I haven't seen the play, but if Ramirez was really hurt, then Gonzalez is an idiot.

But if he was dogging, then he desereved to be pulled, ripped, and booed.

There's a nebulous middle-ground where he really is hurt, and doesn't say so and stays in, at non-hustle capacity without letting his manager know and make a decision. If that's the case, he deserves his manager's wrath but not his manager bitching about him to reporters. Which is ALWAYS a fucking bush thing for a manager to do. In this case, it wasn't only bush, it was stupid.

To insult your manager instead of keeping quiet wasn't very smart either.

Yeah man. The whole situation is pretty fail. I think to take it to the level Hanley did though was shitty.
