Is there any doubt that Bryce Harper goes #1?
Friday, in the NJCAA Tournament he went 6 for 7 with 6 RBI, 3 runs, and hit for the cycle. As if that wasn't enough, yesterday he went 6 for 6 with 4 HR's and 10 RBI. He had a chance to hit for the cycle again in his final AB, but instead hit a HR. I realize it's the NJCAA, but he is only 17 years-old, and he hit 25 HR's in 60 games this year. Nuts.

The only reason he wouldn't go first is I've heard he's a ridiculously huge ass wipe. The Nationals would be crazy not to take him though. They still have Zimmerman locked up till 2013, they are in an extremely rare position to be able to turn things around in a hurry. I think the 2012 Nationals could be a force to be reckoned with.

And I'm pretty sure that's all been with a wood bat. Pretty impressive.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

ESPN has a mock draft up on Insider. They have the Cubs taking RHP Alex Wimmers out of OSU with the 16th pick.
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Summary :
Wimmers is the closest thing to a Mike Leake this draft class has, although he's not the athlete that Leake is and hasn't pitched in a major baseball conference as Leake did. Wimmers does have a chance to end up with two plus offspeed pitches in his curve and change, and that could very well be enough to offset a grade-45 fastball.
Wimmers will pitch at 88-91 most weeks, maybe showing a few 92s, but he's slight of build, and he's not likely to keep that velocity when he's throwing every fifth day instead of every seventh. At 91, the fastball flattens out, but I've seen some tail on the pitch at 88. His curveball was his out pitch on the Cape last summer, 73-75, sharp with a late downward break, but his changeup has improved dramatically this spring, 77-79 with some downward action of its own. He comes from a slot just over ¾ and takes a long stride, generating good arm speed but still no more than average velocity.
There's some question whether he'll hold up as a starter, but I think average fastball/two plus pitches/control is a starter, until his performance proves otherwise.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sounds like they're describing the prospective 116th pick, not the 16th.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Is this an exceptionally weak draft year?

5-10 years ago, it seemed the only pitchers we drafted were fireballers, but we all know how hard it's been to keep those types healthy. Has there recently been a change in philosophy within the organization to pursue Maddux-esque pitchers or something?

Yep, but he was the only recent draftee that I could think of that fit the old mold. I probably don't know what I'm talking about,

I've heard because of sign-ability issues, Nick Castellanos could fall tot he Cubs. He's looking for a big bonus, but is possibly the best all around hitting prospect after Harper in the draft. He looks pretty comfortable hitting in Wrigley.

He also won the home run derby there the day before. The only teams that could maybe take him before the Cubs are the Mets or the White Sox.

I'm hoping in the draft that we go best available athlete... after the first 10-12 guys this year, there seems to be a drop-off and lots of maybe's, if's, and "potential to develop." Personally, I hope we either grab a kid out of high school that seems open to coaching, like Ryan Bolden (power, speed, and athleticism), Drew Vettleson, or A.J. Cole with huge potential upside... OR... a college player 1-2 years away like Dan Klein, Kevin Munson, or Anthony Ranaudo that could compete for a bullpen slot in 2012 (or earlier). It would be great to land a HS bat with potential like Josh Sale in the 2nd round, too, though he may be gone by the time we're on the baord.

I've seen the Cubs projected to take Sale in the first round in mock drafts.

From another mock draft, this one posted by Fanhouse:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->16. Cubs | Kolbrin Vitek (2B) | Ball State
Vitek may be gone by the time the Cubs pick, either to the Padres or possibly the Rangers, but, in this scenario they would be pleased to have him fall into their laps. They are reportedly in the hunt for a position player, if it's the right guy.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Summary :
Vitek loads his hands deep and comes close to barring his lead arm, but he has the bat speed to overcome it (for now, at least), and stays upright through the swing with good hip rotation.
He's got a projectable frame and could add 20 pounds or so by the time he's through, but right now his swing plane is flat and I don't see more than average power down the road unless he makes some significant changes. He's an above-average runner but doesn't have the agility for the infield, making centerfield the optimal destination.
The best-case scenario here has him hitting for average and playing plus defense in center with average power, assuming he doesn't change his swing. However, I am concerned that he has no experience facing quality pitching and may not profile if he has to move to right field.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
