I don't really have a problem with the idea of Hendry making some trades. I'm fine as long as he isn't handing out free agent contracts....

I agree with both of those sentences. However, one or two well-thought out, well-hustled trades (usually salary dumps that he jumps on) seem to be his specialty.

To me, the fact that the Cubs have lost THIS MANY times to a terrible, TERRIBLE Pirates team this year indicates this is not a playoff caliber team. Yes, it's early. Yes, the Cubs could go on a magnificent run and take over the lead in the Central.
But the odds of it happening are so low that I'd rather we set ourselves up to make whatever great trades we can.
Further, is the drop down from Lilly to Cashner in the rotation, or Fukudome to Colvin in right field really so great? I don't think so.

Do you want to back this up with any actual facts? Certainly Hendry can be blamed for some free agent contracts, but where are the trades that he has made that lead you to believe we should be afraid of him making deals?
looking over the internet I found one article that said trading away Corey Patterson was Hendry's WORST trade. I'd say getting guys like Lee, Ramirez, Simon, Lofton, Harden, Nomar all for pretty much nothing balances that out pretty nicely. And those weren't all salary dumps (unless the Red Sox are short of money).
By the way. Our current starting second baseman was acquired during one of Hendry's "frightening" contract dumps. Would you rather have Fontenot or Sosa right now?

I'm not saying we will make a run, but I think the odds are higher than you give them credit for. The Cubs have the most important component for a playoff run. Their starting staff is talented, performing, and deep. If the team can hit, we could make a run. Every guy (with the possible exception of Castro) has proven in the past that they can hit. Of course that doesn't guarantee anything. Maybe Lee and Ramirez are done. Maybe Fuk is in for his patented second half fade. Maybe Soriano has peaked. I just think it won't take an "Angels in the Outfield" scenario for this team to make a run, as they have the one thing every team wants. Solid starting pitching.

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

I don't see how this team can't make a run, it's not like they could perform much worse and be managed any worse. There's really nowhere to go but up.

I don't know how to spell it out any clearer. I'm not saying the cubs will go on a run, just that they can. That's not optimism.
I promise you in 2003 and 2007 and probably 2008, people were jumping ship with regularity. That doesn't mean we will win the division, just that June 2 is early to fucking give up completely.

This team can not firesale. Its just not possible, we have too many big and long contracts.
That said, Ace is right, there is no reason why we shouldn't start looking to move some of our guys right now,
Is there still a possibility we could make a wildcard run, yeah I honestly think so, but the chances are fairly low and like Ace said, I don't think the drop offs from replacement guys would even be very noticeable.
In our current situation our most tradable and valuable players are probably Lilly, Lee, Theriot and Fukudome. Everyone else either has too big or long of a contract or is more valuable to us on the team than traded away in my opinion.
Lilly is in the last year of his contract, still pitching well, he would almost certainly fetch some valuable pieces and we have Gorzelanny or Cashner to fill his spot without a very big drop off.
Lee is in the last year of his contract as well which makes him far easier to trade this year than last year. Almost no chance he is back and if we eat most of his contract this year someone is gonna give something solid for him. And again in the last year of his deal, knowing he wont be back he is far more likely to waive his NTC. He can be replaced by Nady with little drop-off.
Theriot, to me, is now a bench player, but he still has 9/10 steals and seems to have a reputation around the league of being a smart scrappy little player (despite that being very false) I think we could easily move him for something useful.
Fukudome also now has only 1 more year left after this year and has shown to be smart, good defensively and have consistent OBPs, again if we eat some contract he should fetch something useful and he can be replaced by Colvin.
All of those moves help us continue to build up for 2013, when I think our next true window opens, while only being a small hit to the chances of us making the playoffs this year.
I think thats the smart and right thing to do.

For sure. At the same time this where it really, really helps to be a big market team. A team that's willing to spend won't ever have trouble finding corner position players, the traditional power spots. But of course it would be nice to have a young Ryan Howard down there and use our money for other positions.
