This team really is embarrassing. They always manage to hang around until the very end and make a final push to put themselves in position to at least eek out a tie. Then there is always some controversy surrounding a goal being annulled or a perceived bad call, and the Italian media eat it up and run with it for months if not years. I'm tired of it. Go home.

It would be funnier if that were an accurate description of either the World Cup or WWII.
WC: France forfeited, America was there right on time (taking England to a draw, impressively...and screwed out of a win to Slovenia) and I don't think England would have it any other way.
WWII: France surrendered (wisely), America turned up late and England had to defend itself against the Germans until then, but were hardly the only country fighting the Germans.

Not mention that after narrowly avoiding the Americans, and facing England, the Germans will have to find solace in Argentina.

Would just like to say that I, and most people in England, are bloody delighted we get to play the Germans. Might not make a lot of sense as Ghana and then Uruguay/S Korea looks like an easier route to the Semis on paper, but it's the Germans. Plus I reckon we'd lose to Ghana (even though I think you guys will beat them). Big, strong, African teams are not our speciality. Neither are small, weak African teams like Algeria it seems, but there you go.
Tomorrow is going to be a special special day, and I can honestly see us buggering the Germans every which way. We started to play like we should against Slovenia (true it was only Slovenia, but there was a shit load of pressure), and we're going to do what we always, ALWAYS do. We start slow, scrape through the group, stuff someone decent in the 2nd round, then play really well but lose narrowly in the Quarters. As it appears we'll be playing the Argies there (assuming we beat the Krauts), that would make perfect sense. They knocked us out in the '98 World Cup on penalties when we played really really well against them, but Beckham got himself sent off and fucked us. If we somehow get through to the final it *could* be the perfect World Cup run for English fans, as we may have to beat every team who has knocked us out of recent World Cups on the way.
USA pipped us to top of the group, we didn't even reach your World Cup in '94.
Germans in the 2nd round, they beat us on penalties in the Semi Final in 1990.
Argies in the Quarters, they beat us on penalties in the 2nd round in 1998.
Possibly Portugal in the Semis, they beat us on, yep, you guessed it, penalties in the Quarters in 2006 (They also knocked us out of the European Championships 2004, in the Quarter Finals, ON PENALTIES. We hate penalties).
Then Brazil in the Final, they beat us, amazingly not on penalties, in the Quarters in 2002.
So that's the last 5 World Cups in one amazing run to the final this time round. Will never happen, but if it does, how perfect would that be?
Good luck to the US today, I'll be inanely chanting U-S-A, U-S-A at the TV this evening. You guys really need to learn some proper football songs, there's some pretty funny ones. And on that note, I'd like to say how proud I am of the England fans at this World Cup, our games are the only ones in the whole tournament where you can here the crowd singing rather than those bloody vuvuzelas. Every game must feel like a home game to our players, it's unbelievable.

Holy fuck. Play has been stopped four times since Ghana scored their second goal due to "injuries" from their players. This is disgraceful, especially the guy that had to be stretchered off from his own bicycle kick.

This was our best opportunity we'll see for sometime. Donovan and Dempsey will be past their primes in 2014. Bocanegra, Cherundolo, and DeMerit will be deep in their thirties. Altidore(a 2010 disappointment) is our only hope.
While we played great at times this summer, we never put together a whole game. That's what iis frustrating. I was pleased with first half against England despite trailing early. The second half against Slovenia was amazing, and I thought we owned the second half with Ghana. Just wish we could have seen a complete game from the boys. It's frustrating, but at least we can't blame refs, or poor goalkeeping.

There were a number of things taken from this game:
1. Starting Clark after Edu has been great, makes no sense at all.
2. Starting Findley, whose only real skill is his speed, makes no sense at all.
3. Cherundolo had a bad game.
4. Altidore had an awful World Cup. I swear he was a black hole. The ball went into him and never came out. He attacked 2, 3 defenders all the time and failed miserably.
5. Howard, as good as he was all tournament, was completely out of place on the first Ghana goal. You should never give up a near side goal like that.
Anyway, it was an exciting WC for the USA. They actually played better than I thought they would have. I think they earned their place among the top 15 teams in the world. A little disappointing, when I thought they were in good shape given their pairing. Demerit is a local boy (Green Bay), so it was cool to see him get to play as regularly as he did. Hopefully he'll end up on an EPL team after finishing his contract with Watford this past season.
I got nothin'.

Agreed on all accounts. I especially have never understood the love for Findley. He sucked the entire tourney yet Bradley kept trotting him out there.
It was an excite game and run up to today, but the US will never get to the next level unless they can learn to finish teams off. They seem to be able to push forward, but are painful to watch create scoring chances. Anyway, looking forward to 2014. The wait will seem like an eternity.
