Our biggest trade chips?
#1
I am just curious who you guys think are our biggest trade chips on the roster right now. If I had to rank them I would have them like this:

1) Marmol
2) Lilly
3) Dempster
4) Lee
5) Silva
6) Gorz
7) Soto

Beyond those guys I am not sure anyone is wanted by other clubs. IIRC, Lilly and Lee both have expiring contracts which could interest teams looking for rent-a-players. Dempster's contract is not a ridiculous contract when you compare it to the rest of the market and I would think a contender would be interested in him. Silva and Gorz have helped their trade stock a lot...not sure how easy it will be to move Silva though given his contract. I would think someone would be interested in Soto....if the Rangers are interested in A.J. I would have to believe they would definitely be interested in Soto....I would have been on the phone with them yesterday! That brings me to Marmol, I know he is dominant, but I think he could bring in a boatload given his cost and talent...if the right package came along I would trade him.

Who do you guys think are our biggest bargaining chips?

Soto is easily at the top of that list. A young catcher that shows patience and power at the plate? Teams would kill to have him.

Marmol would be up there again because of age. Lilly and Lee because they are proven producers with only a year left on their contracts. Then Gorzelanny. He's young, cheap, and may have found his groove again. Also, a lefty with strike out ability is well sought after. I would possibly argue he has more value than Lee or Lilly.

The financial commitment that comes with Dempster and Silva really drives their values down. Dempster I feel will be more valuable to keep than to trade. Silva still might draw a decent return because he only has one year left after this one and he's one of the best pitchers in the NL right now.

We have some prospects that I think would be valuable in packaged deals, but I think the point of the thread was to pick out veterans, correct?

Yeah, I was just curious about the current roster. Because honestly, if we could move some of them without giving up some of our good prospects that would be best. I see no reason that we can't get a decent return on some of the guys I listed.

If you're rebuilding, you don't trade guys like Marmol, Soto, etc. because they're young guys who you control for several more years. That's what you try to acquire when rebuilding, not what you try to trade away.

That's a good point.
However, non-contending teams don't need a Grade-A closer...that's a luxury.
It's also a type of player that a playoff team would salivate over, thus making him a perfect trading chip: not that important to us (if we're indeed sellers), yet highly coveted by contenders.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

I would not consider trading soto, with castro he is the only young "building block" starter...

Marmol I would only trade if a very good deal would be out there...

But i dont think the team will take that many pieces to rebuild...

From what I have been hearing especially in the last couple of days, Fukudome, Nady, Theriot and Lilly would be the ones that will be traded. More likely press speculation than anything but it all makes sense.

Soriano is untradable and Lee and Zambrano have no trade clauses. I think Ramirez is the same. Dempster has an ugly contract in which the Cubs would have to take a hefty chunk of. Soto is young and cheap so I wouldn't think the Cubs would pull the trigger for that.

In order of most realisic, this is my list.
1. Lilly
2. Nady
3. Silva
4. Soto (I know he is young, but he doesn't seem to fit in long-term)
5. Gorzelanny (only because he is younger and cheaper than a lot of SP out there and could be just as valuable)

I don't believe anyone else will be shopped. Fuk and Lee have little trade value right now mainly because of their contracts.

Freeing their roster spots has value.

Lee's a free agent after the season and I don't think too many teams would balk at his price. In fact, if we're sellers, we'd probably pick up most of his salary for the rest of the season (since we've budgeted for it) in order to get more in return. The question is whether he'd waive his NTC.

If Lee were hitting, I don't think many teams would balk at his salary even for just a half season. I think we would get screwed trying to sell low on him though.

The question is do we think he'll be back? If we're selling and don't think he'll be back, better to sell low then get nothing for him.

As long as we don't have to pay a majority of his salary, then just about any trade that nets us anything of value is fine. I don't think he will re-sign here.

Heck, he might come back even if we trade him. No reason the Cubs can't re-sign him for 2011.
