To me, that says it all. To this day I hate Star Wars...not because it isn't an entertaining movie (it is). But because it ushered in the whole idea, in cinema, that "the special effects are more important that the plot, characters, and dialogue <i>combined</i>. Stunning visual effects are hugely important now, and crashing and exploding things are paramount...you know...<i>block</i>buster mentality!"
I'm by nature a visual person, so I love to see a visual feast on the big screen as much as the next guy. But not to the exclusion of all the other things that make movies entertaining.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

That's not directed by Shyamalan, from what I could see of the credits. I think it's the guy who directed Quarantine.

That is correct. He is the producer, but if his name is attached, he gets credit/blame one way or another.
I didn't realize that this same director made The Poughkeepsie Tapes as well. That's a <i>hard</i> movie to find because it never was released on DVD, but I saw it a couple of years ago, and it is extremely well done. You already know how I feel about Quarantine, but I will give him a pass on that for being a remake.
Anyway, the Devil trailer did nothing for me

If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

few things annoyed me more than the ending to "The Village" and the second half of "The Happening". But I liked his earlier stuff enough to give him a chance regardless. I won't see "The Last Airbender" because it doesn't appeal to me, but if "The Devil" or whatever this one is gets decent reviews, I'd love to see it.
For the record I loved "Signs" much more than anyone I know.

We believe we're the only people in the world that have liked every one of his movies, and that includes his own family.
BT, I know we've discussed this in the past, but I forget what bothered you about the ending of "The Village." To me it was fine, except that I saw it coming a million miles away.
And I won't be watching his latest movie because it's just not my cup o tea. There seems to be a similar movie coming out every week.

I thought the movie cheated (SPOILERS).
First of all, I guessed the ending before I saw the movie, but Shyam cheated. One of the first scenes shows them burying a kid, and the date on the tombstone say 1870 or something like that. Since they were carrying on this charade for the kids, the kids would have absolutely no concept of what 1870 or 2005 meant, so there is no reason to keep up the pretense that they are really living in the 1800's.
Secondly, it became embarrassing. When Ron Howard's daughter is talking to the park ranger, using her old timey English, she came off as an annoying Civil War enthusiast.
Lastly, I know the exact moment I started to hate the movie. When William hurt opens his closet door to show (I think) River Phoenix something, I was literally on the edge of my seat. When that something turned out to be a monster costume that basically invalidated everything that had already happened, I started getting very pissed.
The thing I loved about Signs was that he actually followed through on his premise. For the whole movie you are led to believe that aliens are invading, and instead of having Mel Gibson end up collaring one of the Pritchard boys (and telling them to suck his cock because he deserves it) and finding out the kid has been making the crop circles to fuck with them, Shyamalan actually ended up doing an alien invasion movie. Yes, the idea that an alien culture that is allergic to water is stupid coming to a planet covered in water is dumb, BUT I was able to overlook it because I loved the rest of the movie. "The Village" didn't earn that from me.

I haven't enjoyed anything of his since Unbreakable, and the last movie of his I wasted my time on was the pretentious and sappy Lady in the Water. Sad because M Night showed some signs of talent early on, but then forced himself into a creative infinite loop where he became a caricature of himself and decided that every movie of his needed to have a twist of some sort, even if he bored audiences to tears along the way with lame, derivative stories. You can only string people along for so long. Sorry, you are not the new Hitchcock.

Did he learn "whispers = tension/atmosphere" in film school?
I thought the Sixth Sense was well made, but I guessed the twist before the opening credits were done rolling -- which kind of put a damper on my enjoyment of it.
I thought Unbreakable was really, really good -- probably his best movie, IMO.
I thought Signs was pretty solid until the last 15 minutes or so.
I despised The Village.
I haven't seen anything else he has done since.

So here's where the over-kill hatred for M. Night pisses me off.
I have never seen Lady in the Water. Not because I didn't want to see it, I just never made it a priority even though it intrigued me. For some reason, my curiosity got the better of me today. I figured I've heard from so many people that it wasn't a good movie so I may as well read through a synopsis and find out what it's all about.
Just from reading the synopsis, I think I would have liked it. It sounds pretty off the wall, but I like off the wall. Now it's ruined for me now because everyone hated on it so much that I didn't give it a chance and watch it.
I understand people don't like a lot of his movies. I just don't understand why people go out of their way so much to hate on them.
Also, for all the talk that all of his movies have a twist, the only ones that really do are The 6th Sense and The Village. Unbreakable kinda does, but the ending is really more about coming to the realization that Samuel L is so bent on finding his purpose that he kills mass amounts of people just to figure it out. Signs, Lady in the Water, and The Happening are all suspense. The Last Airbender I haven't seen or read about, but it doesn't seem like there can be much of a twist involved.
