Last I heard, after the Cubs released Simpson in 2013, he latched on with the Southern Illinois Minors of the Independent League. He sucked there for a while, and no one has heard from him since.

Still mad about that pick. I remember the MLB broadcast of the draft and they had to write Simpson's name on a blank slate because nobody expected him to get drafted. And we wasted our fucking first round pick on him.

It's definitely not too early to give up on Maples. I loved the pick when it happened. And I loved the willingness they showed to get him to sign and turn down his football scholarship. But, he's been brutal...and when he hasn't been brutal he's been injured. Hard to call 14th rounders big busts, but what was expected from him when drafted, I think it's fair here.

This is not a defense, but just looking at the subsequent picks following Simpson (and admittedly I am not looking at any minor league numbers), of the very few that are in the bigs, they seem to be fringe at best.  Chris Sale was the best pick that year and he went 3 spots ahead of Simpson.  Of the first rounders they could have theoretically picked, Yelich from the Marlins would have been the best of the bunch, but that's it.

 

My point is, It was definitely a wasted pick but so far I don't think we'll be haunted by the ones they passed up on.  Of course, there is still time.

Yeah, he's been pretty awful overall this year. I'm going to give Bosio some off season time with these new cats (Straily, Turner, Doubront), and some starts, before I start bashing them.

I have no hope for Straily, I have some hope for Doubront if he can get his velocity up just a little bit. Turner I have very high hopes for now that he'll be under Bosio. The kid has the pitches to be very good. He's still so young too.

Expected from him?  He was always considered a high reward/high risk pitcher.  The high risk part means you shouldn't be terribly surprised that he didn't pan out.

Vizcaino getting promoted today. I thought they may shut him down with his first healthy season in the books, but he's coming up. I'm really interested to see him pitch at this level.
