If he gets a call up I'll be excited. But with Bonifacio coming and if Alcantara stays I just don't see it happening.

He's got a ways to go to show that he's solved AAA picthers yet. I just think this is the start of engendering positional flexibility.

I'm just surprised they're putting him at 2B this season. I don't think a call-up is imminent, but it could be some indication that it is not off the table for this season.
Bonifacio will have absolutely zero impact on what is done with Baez. Alcantara can play the OF. Again, I'm not predicting a call-up (to the contrary, I've predicted otherwise since Baez started the season slumping). I'm just a little surprised by this.

(So can Alcantara, he played 51 minor league games there, almost 5x more than he played the OF). B. Anybody that can play CF can typically play a corner OF spot. C. If Baez was to be called up this year (and that's still a huge if), I'd be shocked if it was before July 31.

B. True, but we are showcasing two corner OFers right now. C. I'd be shocked if it happened at all for the reason I already mentioned. My point is that a move would have to happen, that's all.

He has a .455 OPS in July anyways. To the extent they are showcasing corner OFers, that gets back to the point that a call-up is not going to happen in the next 2 weeks before the deadline, so that's a non-factor. Also, I'm not sure I agree with the premise that they are showcasing Ruggiano. I think he could be had for the right price, but I think he has a reasonable shot of being back with the team next year. Bottom line is that if they wanted to call up Baez after the deadline (of which I am very skeptical), I don't think they'd hesitate to DFA Bonifacio.

Unlikely? Absolutely. But getting Baez the time at 2B right now isn't harming anything, so why not? Of course, there is also the unlikely contingency that they are freeing SS at Iowa for Russell.

The only thing that raises my eyebrows is that if the idea was to get Baez some playing time at another position, without an eye towards bringing him up this season (or bringing Russell up to Iowa, though I agree that's probably not going to happen), is why start now? They could have been getting him a start or 2 per week at 2B all season.
