Quote:I love Stroman. Makes me wonder now if some other big things are in the works post-lockout? Good job Jed.
Same.  As others have pointed out, seems odd to sign him to a three year with an opt out if you were gonna tank it.  Dare I say...a certain SS?

Really?

Would love to see Carlos in Cub blue but why would Carlos Correa sign with the Cubs? Like every other player, it’s either they offer a better chance to win or Cubs provide a better financial opportunity.

Correa’s other known suitors are Astros, Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Braves. Basically, all 2021 playoff teams including recent World Series and NL and AL Champion Series contenders. Each of these teams rosters are a significant upgrade to the state of Cubs current roster. If Correa signs with the Cubs, it’s got nothing to do with a better opportunity to win in the short term. Could discuss the NL Central as a “more winnable” than other divisions but that point is debatable and only allows Cubs an easier path to playoffs and better opportunity to win should include more than periodically getting into a wildcard game

If Cubs don’t offer a better opportunity to win than the Cubs will need to provide a better financial package so a higher AAV and more opt outs. Seagar’s 10 year, $325 MM contract seems to set the bar for SS. A premium over $32.5 MM per year could be in $35-40 MM range. Let’s say $37 MM with opt outs at 3 and 5 years could be Cubs baseline offer for a 9 year, $333 MM contract. Won’t go into the tax situation as Astros and other TX - and believe FL teams - can offer a lower contract due to lack of state income taxes but it’s not an insignificant amount.

Could discuss Chicago’s greater marketing opportunities than Houston’s or Atlanta’s but NY and LA probably provide greater opportunities than Chicago.

If Cubs want him, they have the financial means to get Correa. The signing would demonstrate the Cubs front office and ownership is committed to being competitive but just don’t see this organization making that size financial commitment with the roster in its current state.

You're pretty much the Bob Nightengale of Cubs fandom, so I expect him to be a lock to sign here now.

Would be psyched to be wrong and have Cubs sign Correa and then sign/acquire: a stud CF, a flame throwing starter, Castellanos as DH/LF, Rizzo at a discount, and 2-3 additional veteran bullpen arms

I'm mostly joking dude, obviously it would be ridiculous to think we are the favorites to land him.  I do think the move means they will do something bigger than anticipated at SS though.  The reality is there is zero chance Stroman signs here without being assured they were going for it, that's just a fact.

We absolutely need a real SS, especially with all of the groundball pitchers in the rotation now. Madrigal/Hoerner isn't going to cut it at middle infield.

And I dont see them going after Story...so what other options are there?

That's a valid question.

And there are no promising SS's in the upper levels of our minor league system. The only way Story makes sense is if his market collapses (which it could). Unless there's a trade in the works for a stud SS, it's basically Correia or bust. That probably won't happen, but Jed clearly has more deals up his sleeve or Stroman never would have signed here.

Or maybe Stroman just wanted 71 million dollars.
