Wake me when the Cubs offseason commences

Scooter Gennett? Fucking seriously?

Here's some fun facts: Gennett and Castellanos have the same career fWAR (actually, Castellanos leads 10.4 to 10.3). In terms of rWar, Gennett rules Castellanos (10.8 to 7.1) and in Baseball Prospectus WARP, Catellenos blows Gennett away (11.8 to 5.6).

Hopefully Scooter has priced himself out of the Rickettses' price range.

The year is 1987.  Explain this post to Harry Caray.

You'll have to get me drunk first. Of course, if I'm with Harry, that should take 90 minutes.

The initial point of my post was going to be that despite his amazing run with the Cubs last year, Castellanos signing with the Reds isn't really worth anyone moaning. I think the more salient point, however, is that there's still a long way to go in putting full faith into reductive metrics like WAR.

Failing to mention the recent history of Scooter vs Nick. In 2019, one player had a -0.7 WAR, the other a 2.7 WAR (Baseball Reference) Can you guess which WAR represents the player that the Cubs seem to be getting ready to sign?

Absolutely--the guy far more likely to be worth his contract.

There's a reason they call it recency bias; going into last year, Gennett looked like a far better player than Castellanos.

I do indeed believe Castellanos is better than Gennett, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he disappoints on that contract and am pretty certain that fans calling for them to sign him based on his time with the club last year are deluding themselves.

I get people are mad at the offseason, missing out on Castellanos though is not something to be upset about.

Castellanos could be a beast in that ballpark and a great DH option if DH comes early in contract

I wouldve liked to bring Nick back, but I knew it wasnt gong to happen so its hard to get too worked up about it.

I'm just upset that he went to a division rival. Hopefully he opts out after 1 year.

Yeah, I'm probably going to find myself getting annoyed with him pretty quickly on the Reds -- especially if he crushes it. He's the kind of guy you love on your team but drives you crazy as an opponent.

This explains why Marquee announced that some of their hires, like Chris Myers, will do some play-by-play work.
