2020 Team
Seems clear they're going to make very minor moves, hope to be competitive, then sell off at the deadline if they suck.

That seems to be the most likely scenario at this point. Just hope none of the big boys get injured or perform poorly going into July.

Then next year...watch out!

If I never read "service time grievance" again, it will be too soon.

Reply
Do you think that KB’s grievance will be decided before the trading deadline?
Reply
Hopefully these service time shannanigans will be a thing of the past with the upcoming CBA negotiations. Sure seems like the entire FA process could undergo massive changes, mostly for the better, but we'll see. The QO and related draft pick compensation needs to go away.

If you really want to depress yourself, go read the 2016 team thread up through when Fowler shows up unexpectedly at ST.  That offseason was amazing.  They signed everyone.  Not so much anymore.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

By the way, I know that I'm really breaking news that 2016 was a better time to be a Cubs fan.

The last time I had any amount of fun during the offseason was 2017/18 in the lead up to signing Darvish. Even that period seems like ancient history.

I am well aware that it is incredibly unlikely, but any thoughts on the Arenado scenario?

Reply
I just hope neither the Cards or Dodgers land him.
Reply
Well, specifically Cubs trading for him and then following up with a KB trade.

Oh fuck it, you know the Cards are going to land him.

Isn't Arenado making ~$35mil per season? I don't see any way the FO is allowed to add $16-17mil in payroll obligations even after subtracting KB's projected $18/19mil salary.

Deals could include Heyward to dump salary and WillCo. Then potentially trade off Bryant to restock minor league. Finally, then potentially add back Nick the Big Stick.

Explain to me who exactly is going to take on Hewyard's contract without requiring the Cubs to take a bad contract back.

I'm not even getting into the fact that he can block trades to 12 teams through the end of the season (at which point he'll have 10-and-5 rights and have full no trade protection).
