As for the Ricketts, I've been pretty critical over the years, but the reality is 2 years ago they signed Darvish and last year they took Hamels for another year at a steep salary and then signed Kimbrel. You can debate if these were good signings or not, but it's not true that they didn't spend some money. Unless I'm forgetting who was available and there were bigger names, they signed the biggest starter FA and then the biggest closer FA in consecutive years. It's not nothing.

Yeah, I've re-read that quote a few times since last night, and the hot take in the midst of another inactive winter meeting was probably not the correct one. Still expect deals to get done, but am tempering my anxiety.

In today's Rule 5 Draft, the Cubs selected RHP Trevor Megill from the Padres. Originally drafted by the Cards, he's had varied success and suffered some injuries, but maintained big K numbers along the way. Could be a sleeper in the pen.
