To be fair, they've extended most of these guys before they've done jack shit at the ML level.

I mean, would it be nice if the Cubs had extended more guys very early on so that we wouldn't be coming up on free agency for some of them?  Sure.  But that was never going to happen with KB or any other Boras clients.  Likewise, if you think back to Javy's early years, he was anything but a sure thing, so it would have been a very risky proposition.

 

Those extensions don't always work out so great.  Remember that the Cubs also signed Castro to an early long-term extension around the same time as Rizzo, and that worked out so well that 3 years later and with 4 years left on his deal, all the Cubs could get for him was Adam Warren.

Good news is that they plan to have Darvish pitch his scheduled 3 innings from today in a sim game tomorrow, so he should stay on schedule.
