2021 Team
Listened to Rizzo mic'd up in tonight's game. He loves the game.

Reminded me of an essay I read when he was coming up. In Mexico, on bus ride to the next game he was talking up staying loose. He liked the freedom of that Mexican development league-- giant bat flips and stupid in-game chatter. Advised his seatmate to lighten up and enjoy the ride. In Mexico. He was having fun then.

In this article his: “You’re going to have ups and downs, and it’s how you carry yourself through these times that makes the good times sweeter.” sounds like he hasn't changed much.

He's easy to to like, and he had very good night tonight.

So there's that.

What if any trade value does Zach Davies have remaining?

Its clear that he is not working out as a starter for the club but not certain what Cubs can do at this point (5 GS, 19 IP, 20 ER, 15 BB, 14 K).

Just as we have heard how easy it is to game plan against Cubs offense, wondering if similar starters are also an issue with this squad. Pairing Hendricks with Davies - and Arrieta - in the starting rotation may be damaging as teams can game plan to face crafty, location focused starters with high 80 mph four seem fastballs.

Davies and Hendricks were supposed to be the two consistent pieces of the rotation, but so far this season, theyve been not only bad but two of the worst starters in baseball, allowing a combined 39 earned runs. From todays game story in SunTimes article. https://chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/2021/4...the-braves

No clue if he has any value given his starts this season but issue needs to be addressed as the pairing may be putting big strains on fragile bullpen and non existent offense

Who could have predicted that pairing a soft-tossing rotation constructed with 4-5 inning starters and an erratic bullpen would go so horribly wrong?

If it worked out, they'd look like absolute geniuses.

Now that Davies and Pederson are returning to MLB level production and the current Cubs squads potential appears to be a few games over 500 if everyone is healthy- can/should the Cubs trade these veteran guys?

Joc is 12-27 since coming off the IL on 4 May and Zachs ERA over last 3 starts is 1.10 (2 ER over 16 1/3 innings)

A few caveats - already expecting that Cubs will be selling off Bryant and Kimbrel for some magic beans prior to trading deadline assuming they are healthy and continue their torrid production. Neither player - Joc nor Zach) is part of Cubs long term solution. In addition, despite 25% fan capacity opening for Wrigley and expected full openings for late in year - Wrigley is probably not going to draw much more than a million fans this season so expect more historical losses crap. Recent fan surveys say about 1/3 state theyre willing to attend a MLB game if venues were fully open and covid under control.

Im not one for tanking future seasons as the new CBA will likely limit/hinder teams ability to drastically lower payroll and given the Ricketts Wrigleyville real estate, media/gambling and other investments, they need butts in Wrigley but losing these non essential players may allow spending on 2022 and other future roster additions

And how different would the 2020 Cubs be if they were able to hold onto Caratini?

Having Vargas and his 140 BA as a DH really doesn’t strike fear in any opposing pitcher over age 16

Concerned with Heyward being removed from game last night, maybe Cubs should have received something more than $1 to offset the cost of either ice for Heyward’s hamstrings or another healthy outfielder
