Violent Femmes were the tipping point for me. My best friend had me listen to A Blister in the Sun -- that was probably the last day I really listened to the Duran Durans of the world. It was also around the same time that skateboarding became incredibly trendy. So I bought a skateboard, a pair of Chuck Taylors, bleached my hair and started listening to edgier music.

I'm sure my mom cried herself to sleep that night, too...
