Thriller was the first album I ever owned (on vinyl, of course). Seven and the Ragged Tiger was the second.

Look, I'm not gonna bash Butcher's gender-indeterminate taste in music but I'll say that for some of us that were in out twenties in the '80s...it was all about Husker Du, the Replacements, the Minutemen...Costello in our highbrow moments and Squeeze in our more candy-assed moments. Duran Duran were male models on MTV.

I was listening to the oldies, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister and Van Halen back in the early 80s. I'm not saying that I hated the Michael Jacksons or Duran Durans of the day, but they just weren't my favorites even at 6 or 7 years old. I discovered Punk and Metal in the mid to late 80s, when the glory days were already over. I always wished that I could have been 5 years older, just to be able to experience the punk and post-punk era first hand.

Rok, if it's any consolation, I think the golden era took place when I was between the ages of 7 and 12 and always felt like I missed all the action by a decade.
And as much fun as it is to whomp on Butcher. I have a ridiculous adoration for the cheeziest '70s pop you can imagine so as likely as I am to be listening to King Crimson or Lou Reed, I'm just as likely to be listening to the Carpenters or ABBA. I'm not on the most solid ground.
During the part of the '80s when all that Brit synth-pop was happening...away from MTV and the charts there was a HUGE amount of fucking fantastic American music being made by bands mentioned above as well as the Meat Puppets, Violent Femmes, Thin White Rope, Flaming Lips and many many others.
The '80s is where Indie rock comes from. The '80s were great...just not great on the radio.

Violent Femmes were the tipping point for me. My best friend had me listen to A Blister in the Sun -- that was probably the last day I really listened to the Duran Durans of the world. It was also around the same time that skateboarding became incredibly trendy. So I bought a skateboard, a pair of Chuck Taylors, bleached my hair and started listening to edgier music.
I'm sure my mom cried herself to sleep that night, too...
