When I look at that 89 team, I can't help but smile and also shake my head of what could have been. I thought that team would be dominate for a couple of years with young pitchers such as Maddux and Bielecki, up and coming young players in Walton, Smith and Grace and influential all star vets in Sandberg, Dawson and Sutcliffe.
Me thinks that the big reason was that they envisaged that the positional players were strong enough in that we could let go Palmiero as there was Grace and we needed some bullpen help, so we got the young Mitch Williams who they probably wanted to close for us for years to come.
Too bad it all fell apart a year later...
