They didn't think Raffy had enough power. He showed them they were wrong, but looks like if the Cubs had simply roided him up, it would have worked. As far as the OF goes, we had the runner up for the Rookie of the year award in LF that year, the rookie of the year in CF, and a Hall of Famer in his prime in RF (or at least 2 years off of his MVP season), so our OF was actually pretty stocked. Why did we trade Rafael Palmeiro, back in the day? - Butcher - 02-11-2010 If you believe the legend, it's because he was having an affair with Cindy Sandberg and he needed to get shipped off. I'm thinking that isn't the real reason, though. Why did we trade Rafael Palmeiro, back in the day? - kbwsb - 02-11-2010 Damn, I had forgotten that our young outfielders came in at # 1 and 2 in the '89 Rookie of the Year voting. Did they both have to suck for the rest of their careers?! He turned into a decent PH. Walton was just a headcase. Palmeiro was torn up by the traded. He was banging an acquaintance of mine and showed up at her place that evening in tears. He didn't believe that the Cubs would trade him. Man...Raffy got around. Why did we trade Rafael Palmeiro, back in the day? - Coldneck - 02-11-2010 Raffy was a contact hitter with little power before we traded him. He wnet to Texas and found some juice and the rest is history. Why did we trade Rafael Palmeiro, back in the day? - rok - 02-11-2010 Palmeiro didn't start to demonstrate much power until 1991, though his doubles totals shot up between 1988-90. You'd have thought that someone in the organization could have foreseen a jump in slugging eventually for him. Mark Grace showed doubles power, but that wasn't indicative of a future home run surge. I think if you are making up a list of "guys whose power surges were foreseeable", Palmeiro, McGwire and Sosa should rank pretty far down on that list. Why did we trade Rafael Palmeiro, back in the day? - kbwsb - 02-11-2010 Palmeiro was more than a "contact hitter," even when on the Cubs. In his last year on the Cubs, as a 23 year-old, he was an All-Star, and finished 2nd in the league in hitting (to Tony Gwynn). That's not the type of guy you trade away.
