It depends on what outputs your laptop has and what inputs your TV has. My laptop is a bit older (from 2006), so I use a VGA cable into my HDTV's "PC Input". The quality is very good and it is HD resolution, but the best quality would be with an HDMI cable if your laptop has that output. Most new ones do these days. The other benefit with HDMI is that it inputs the sound to your TV too, so you don't have to use an extra cable for that. Since I don't have an HDMI output on my laptop, I have to use the headphone jack to get the audio to my TV if I don't want to use the crappy laptop speakers.
