FWIW, the Cubs have the easiest remaining schedule of any WC contending team.

The second place team in the Central will finish farther out of the WC race than they will from first in their own division.

I'd like to make the playoffs. I'd like to win the division. I'm not out of hope yet. Failing that, I'd like to win the WC. I'm just not optimistic. Not bereft of hope...but lacking optimism.

OK....but that really doesn't explain you prediction about the 2nd place team being farther out of the WC race compared to the division race.

Explain? I think the 2nd place team from the Central will not have the best record among NL 2nd place teams. I think it's win the division or watch from home.

That's different than what you originally said, and it seems more likely than your first prediction, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
