and there it is. some people think about sammy and the first things they think about are the stupid shit he said and the corked bat and the supposed steroid use. i don't. i remember him running hard to right, and blowing kisses, and really really freaking loving playing the game, and breaking windows, and holding the flag, and making every at-bat a must-see event. and just fucking doing things i had never seen before. that part was genuine. he loved playing the game. that's why he played it hard, that's why he never missed time (and the one time he did, it was a meaningless game at the end of a very disappointing season, of which he was crucified), thats why he was always smiling. was he dumb? for sure. were there times when i wished he kept his mouth shut? absolutley. but the cubs made him what he was. they encouraged that behaviour. sammy was a gladiator. no doubt about it. i'd massage his taint if given the honour.

it's not the ideal scenario ace, but it is what it is. i try to focus on the way i felt then, the good stuff, the fun of it all.

It <i>was</i> fun. It was a blast. After almost a decade of the blahs, Sammy almost single-handedly breathed life into the Cubs. It was him and the '98 season that revived not only the Cubs, but all of baseball. Let's not forget the dark days of the strike shortened season. Baseball was in the crapper and the Cubs were right in the thick of the poo. It was Harry, Steve and Sammy that brought me personally out of my baseball doldrums. I haven't tried to put that genie back in the bottle since.

I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.
