See my post in the original thread. Doesn't do a thing to taint my memories. It was what it was in that particular point in history. He was the most exciting player I've ever seen.

He wasn't a team player, all he cared about were his stats, and getting into the hall, as evidenced by the quote at his retirement... Fuck him.

and there it is. some people think about sammy and the first things they think about are the stupid shit he said and the corked bat and the supposed steroid use. i don't. i remember him running hard to right, and blowing kisses, and really really freaking loving playing the game, and breaking windows, and holding the flag, and making every at-bat a must-see event. and just fucking doing things i had never seen before. that part was genuine. he loved playing the game. that's why he played it hard, that's why he never missed time (and the one time he did, it was a meaningless game at the end of a very disappointing season, of which he was crucified), thats why he was always smiling. was he dumb? for sure. were there times when i wished he kept his mouth shut? absolutley. but the cubs made him what he was. they encouraged that behaviour. sammy was a gladiator. no doubt about it. i'd massage his taint if given the honour.

it's not the ideal scenario ace, but it is what it is. i try to focus on the way i felt then, the good stuff, the fun of it all.

Sammy Sosa Tested Positive for Steroids - Butcher - 06-16-2009

I still like Sammy. My interest in baseball was waning in the 90s after the strike and after years and years of absolute Cubs suckage. Sammy brought my interest level back to where it was before. He brought it back to '84 levels, when I was a kid and I thought the Cubs would make the playoffs every year. He was the most potent offensive force that any of us have ever seen on the Cubs, and probably ever will see. Was he juicing? Probably. But so were 90+ percent of the pitchers he took deep 60 times a season.

And do we know for sure it was steroids? Not that it matters, but it's what the title of the thread says. I thought the report was a "banned substance" or some shit.

It was fun. It was a blast. After almost a decade of the blahs, Sammy almost single-handedly breathed life into the Cubs. It was him and the '98 season that revived not only the Cubs, but all of baseball. Let's not forget the dark days of the strike shortened season. Baseball was in the crapper and the Cubs were right in the thick of the poo. It was Harry, Steve and Sammy that brought me personally out of my baseball doldrums. I haven't tried to put that genie back in the bottle since.

I'm feeling some serious man love for you, Butcher. We pretty much said the same thing at the same time.

Sammy Sosa Tested Positive for Steroids - chitownwinninitall - 06-16-2009

I couldn't be less shocked by this news. Anyone who is surprised by this has had their head in the sand for the last decade. I hate to say it but I loved watching sammy too, but I was 12 during that 98 season. When I look back now and read all of the reports and specifically these new stories I feel like a chump, the fact I was taken in and actually cheered for this cheater makes me sick. If some of you can look past it and just remember the good times more power to you, but It makes my skin crawl to know that I looked up to and respected a complete fraud, a guy who cheated his way to the top.

Sammy Sosa Tested Positive for Steroids - dk123 - 06-16-2009

I really don't give a shit about the whole steroid thing, both in this case, and in general. I guess it's just me.

Stop being so melodramatic. Everyone was doing it, and Sammy just happened to be one of the best at doing it. He was better than Ken Caminti, and Jeff Bagwell, and Craig Bigio, and Mark Macgwire, and Albert Pujols, and Jim Edmonds, and Scott Rolen, and Manny Ramirez. It was the era, and mlb pretty much turned a blind eye to the entire thing.

The more I think about it, everyone during that stretch from 1995-2005 was juicing, both hitters and pitchers. I'd like to believe that it was a more level playing field, but it still pisses me off. I won't single Sammy out because he gave me a ton of good memories, but I also can't say that I have the same feelings toward him that I had for Dawson, Ryno, early career Maddux, etc from my youth. No one will ever top those players in my mind, because I was a different type of fan growing up than I am now. I just looked at the game differently then. I can see why a lot of fans feel the way they do about Sammy, and I respect their feelings. This news changes nothing from my perspective.
