Contract year.

And if he doesn't suffer his first 2 injuries of his career, he'd be right about there the past 2 seasons also.

Exactly. He's not really playing worse. The last 2 years he was as good or better than all but one year of his career. When he gets hot, he's the best hitter on the planet not named Albert Pujols. He just happened to get hot for a bit longer in his season in Washington. He's still on pace to hit over 40 homers this year. Right now he has little chance up there, but he's due to have a major hot streak on the way where he hits .400 and has 5 homers in a 1-2 week span. It's what he always does, have we really not learned that yet?
Look at 2007 with us...
April: .270(20-74), 0 HR, 1 RBI, .700 OPS
June: .336(41-122), 11 HR, 1.076 OPS
July: .265(30-113), 3 HR, .701 OPS
September: .320(39-122), 14 HR, 1.108 OPS
2008...
April: .192(10-52), 2 HR, .577 OPS
May: .345(40-116), 10 HR, 1.058 OPS
This year...
April: .284(25-88), 7 HR, .955 OPS
May: .216(24-111), 5 HR, .657 OPS
He gets on hot streaks unlike anybody in baseball, and it's going to happen again soon, if pretty much every season of his career in an indication. Even in his amazing 2006, he had months where he hit .204 and .207.
