It could pay off with the idea in mind that if Marshall does well and we don't "need" Peavy, the Padres don't have as much leverage. Plus, if Marshall is performing the way he has in spring training, the Padres may decide he could be the centerpiece of a trade rather than Vitters (although it's debatable who's worth more to the Cubs if Marshall is pitching to the tune of a 1.93 ERA early on).
