AH, I stopped watching after the Cubs picked, and was going on the odd idea that there would only be one guy named Sale picked in the first round. Egg on my face.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Must be a nice surprise for him. Someone must have planned on scooping him up higher than expected and the Cubs had to one-up them.

<!--quoteo(post=98437:date=May 27 2010, 04:38 AM:name=Coach)-->QUOTE (Coach @ May 27 2010, 04:38 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->(I know there will be quite a few mock drafts, but I thought we might post a couple big name ones to see what is being discussed)

Here's MLB.com's take:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <!--quotec-->16. Chicago Cubs: Asher Wojciechowski, RHP, The Citadel
Last year, it was a college bat. The year before, it was a college arm. That arm, Andrew Cashner, is close to big-league ready. Adding an arm for Wojciechowski could give them another quick-to-the-bigs pitcher.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Summary :

Wojciechowski has shown himself to be one of the hardest-throwing college starters in this year's class, but with the separation that he's also put up good results to go with his two quality pitches.

He'll work at 92-94, but regularly runs it up to 96 or better over the course of a typical start, driving the ball in hard to his glove side but without any tail or sink on the pitch. His breaking ball is a hard slurve at 80-82 mph with good two-plane break and a sharp, late movement away from right-handed hitters. His changeup is a show-me pitch and he'll need to develop one (or a split) to be a starter in the majors.

He's big and strong, already filled out physically, with good arm speed, but his arm tends to start late in his delivery and he does get that back elbow up a little high. The worst-case scenario here is a power reliever, but given the body, velocity, and potential plus breaking ball he has to get the chance to succeed as a starter first.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sounds alot like Cashner

I noticed on the big draft board at the event that Simpson's sign was a slightly different color than the rest.
I bet they had to make one special for him on the spot.

You know, after seeing all of our hot shot prospects crash and burn much of the past decade and a half, I really don't mind taking someone that 1) No one knows about and 2) Has no expectations.

I kinda like that Wilken has the balls to draft exactly who he wants and not worry what the fans or media want or like. He knows his shit and puts himself out on a limb. The Colvin pick was almost identical to this one.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken said the team's first-round pick, Hayden Simpson, has a good four-pitch mix and also a very good feel for pitching. Simpson's style has been compared to Tim Lincecum, and Wilken said physically, the wiry Simpson is a cross between Lincecum and Roy Oswalt.

"I see a similarity in that we both use our whole bodies to throw the ball," Simpson said of Lincecum's somewhat contorted delivery. "We use everything we have."

"It rivals it a little bit. You don't have quite the arch," Wilken said. "He's pretty supple. He's got a very fast arm."

Scouts say Simpson has the same bulldog attitude that Oswalt and Lincecum have, too. Cubs Minor League roving pitching instructor Mark Riggins graded Simpson "100 percent" on his delivery. Wilken said one club that had extra picks on the first day of the First-Year Player Draft also was close to taking Simpson.

"This guy just made sense," Wilken said.

GM Jim Hendry spoke to Simpson Monday night. The signing deadline is Aug. 16. If Simpson did sign early, he could report to Mesa, Ariz., for mini camp, and then it would be determined where the right-hander would be assigned.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I like it. I'm amazed at all the negativity about this pick. People are going crazy about pre-draft player ratings. Since when do those ratings pan out, other than maybe a couple top picks?

I'm fine with the pick, as long as we are able to grab some guys in rounds 2-4 that are going to be able to make an impact. Some of their picks have been right on, but some really haven't (Tony Thomas, for example, looks to be a career minor leaguer, though was picked in the 2nd round). Let's see... Under JH's watch, we've done pretty well developing our own guys. Considering how JH is likely performing to keep his job, not going the "safe bet" way in the 1st round took some guts. I hope it works out for all of us.

Exactly. It's not as though the Cubs were thinking, "yeah, this is a 6th round talent, and he'll definitely be around in the 2nd or 3rd round, but let's pick him now for shits and giggles!"

Exactly...even the "predictability" of the NFL and NBA drafts has become a crapshoot.

And...I also love Wilken's balls to trust himself and his data.

Take the guy you want...
