All Time Best Cubs - Second Base
#1
2B is a thin position.

1. Ryne Sandberg
2. Billy Herman
3. Glenn Beckert
4. Johnny Evers
5. Rogers Hornsby - this was goofy, as he only really had 1 good year with the Cubs near the end of his career (I hated adding him, as he's a career Cardinal, but the position sucked!)
I got nothin'.

Ryno, and it's not even close.

That says it all, really. I like the rest of the list.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

There's no one even close to Ryno.

Evers was WAY overrated. Beckert and Herman were good, not great. Hornsby only had 4 years with the Cubs and 1 that was awesome, 1 good (but he was injured) and the other 2 were meh.
I got nothin'.

If you're going to mention his name, at least do it properly.

not sure where he belongs, but I have fond memories of Davey Lopes once he played for the Cubs.

As a side note, I have a distinct memory of Billy Grabarkewitz's first game with the Cubs. Odd.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

and it's simply insane that Manny Trillo isn't on this list. except that he kinda sucked for the Cubs.

I disagree that Evers is overrated. (Tinker and Chance too, but it'd take me too long to explain why).

Hornsby only had one good year as a Cub, but is was the greatest year any Cub 2nd baseman ever had. One mind-blowing number: 156 runs scored. I don't know what the NL record is, but I'd bet that number is pretty close.
You want slash stats? .380/.459/.679
Trad stats? 39-HR 149-RBI .380-AVG
Led the league in Games played, OPS, Slugging %, Total bases (409), and a plethora of others. Even flashed a little leather, leading the league in double plays.
Led the Cubs to the World Series, and won the MVP unanimously.

Love him or hate him, that's a season.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Kabe's, that's why I included Hornsby. He was only a Cub for 4 seasons (hurt 2 1/3 of them) and he put those stats up in one of them. He also had a 2/3 season where he was awesome. I hesitate to put him higher simply because he was/is a Cardinal through and through.
I got nothin'.
