I say they keep him down long enough to keep him from becoming a Super Two...

"A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a "Super Two" and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season. "

I'd like to know how this breaks down in practical terms for Castro.

It's going to depend on how the other 1st year players rank in service time this year. There's actually quite a few that started the year with MLB teams and a couple that have trickled in the last week. I think the Cubs may want to make sure he's safely into that bottom 83% in service time before bringing him up.

I say keep him down as long as we can without it costing us too much money. Castro isn't going to miraculously wake up Ramirez's bat. Sure, he might help our defense, but scoring runs is our problem right now and the middle of our lineup isn't doing it right now.

Super two's are pretty rare. Most of the time they are relief pitchers it seems. If we keep him down til June 1st, I think that is going to be safely avoided. Plus I'm not sure it matters anyway. Are we really THAT worried about him becoming a free agent in 6 years rather than in 7 years at this point in time? Not to mention by the time he is arbitration eligible, all these contracts will be over and Lou and Hendry will likely both be gone. Plus worrying about that means we are banking on him becoming a superstar and if he does, I don't think any of us will mind paying him.

BTW, in the past 4 seasons, no player has been a 'super two' with less than 2 years and 140 days service time. If Castro was brought up June 1st, he wouldn't be able to get more than about 2 years 125 days.

I'v always heard that once you get to May 15 you don't have to worry about Super 2.

If the player is on the 25 man roster for less than 85 days, then they cannot be a Super 2 no matter what. So that would be early July.

If the player is up before July, they will take a look at their Major League service time and compare it to other players that were brought up this year before July and will take the top 15% in terms of service time to be Super 2s. So, if all the first year players this year get optioned for significant amounts of time, at some point and Castro stays with the Cubs all the way up till two years from now, it's conceivable that he could be a Super 2 even if he is brought up after May 15.

These rules are as complicated as the tax code.

Teams like Tampa Bay have to worry about Super 2 guys.
The Chicago Cubs should not.

My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but I'm pleased to see the discussion it spurred.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

I think that Castro has adjusted well to AA pitching

Wow - contrast Beliveau and Raley's performances. Both are considered good low level prospects.

Another that pops into mind for some reason is Antigua. I think he's done well so far this year.

Who was the pitcher who came out of nowhere like two years ago at AA - he was out of Ole Miss I think. Whatever happened to that guy?

Mark Holliman? He was a Rebel.

He's in the Brewers organization now.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.
