Yes and yes. I'd rather get him than another reliever at least, provided we don't overpay.

Has Sheets even thrown for scouts since his injury. I read something in December saying he was planning to throw of a mound for MLB scouts prior to signing a contract. I've never read that he has since that article. Then I read Ace's story at BN that he refused to send his med records to Baltimore. What if his arm is toast and he's lost 10 mph off his fastball?

Well, according to all these reports, he is planning to throw for teams this month. I don't have a problem with waiting until everyone sees what he's got left. It is very uncharacteristic of me, but l have a good feeling about this situation. Having Maddux around to help Wells, Z and Sheets can only be a good thing too, provided they can stay healthy.

If Sheets has bounced back from elbow surgery which is likely, I would love to see the Cubs sign him to an incentive laden, 1 or 2 year deal. I don't know if that will do it but signing Sheets and assuming he can return to pitching like he did for the Brewers is the quickest way this team improves for 2010.

In 2010, it appears the offense will have to rely on players getting healthy and returning to 2009 form. The defense should improve with Byrd in center and Aramis' return for the full year. The bullpen is questionable but hopefully Marmol can perform better than Gregg, Guzman can stay effective and healthy and Grabow/Sheets/Stevens/Caridad can offer a bridge to them. On paper, the one area that the 2010 Cubs have declined is starting pitching. 2009 most effective starter, Lilly, is gone till at least mid April but probably much longer. Harden, who was extremely talented but rarely effective past 5.67 innings, is gone. Cubs are going to have to rely on Wells being effective and finding a solid No. 5 from the Silva, Gorzellanek, Smardzija, AAA candidate. That's not pretty compared to Z, Lilly, Dempster, Harden, Gaudin rotation that the Cubs had going into 2009 spring training.

If Sheets can return to form, the 2010 Cubs starting pitching staff goes from OK/good to great.

Sheets has a ton of upside, but why aren't the Cubs really being linked to Pineiro? He will likely come cheaper than Sheets and isn't nearly the injury risk.

Because hopefully they realize that without Duncan and LaRussa's "magic" he will most likely go back to being the bum that he was prior to pitching in Baseball City, USA.

Muskrat is a moran, and I'm sure she's just speculating. However, I don't think we have a whole lot of payroll flexibility so this wouldn't surprise me.

I know, but I also believe that Sheets won't get anywhere near 10-12 mil per with his injury history. I think a deal similar to what Harden got from the Rangers is reasonable, and something we can afford.
