Bingo.

WHEN Hendry let's Bradley go for nothing, I will embrace the Marlon Byrd era and hope against hope for a solid glove and a decent ave.

I agree. If we have a $140M payroll and Sam f'n Fuld is our regular CF my head will explode.

I thought this Neyer article was interesting.

QUOTE Sometimes the math is so obvious, it's almost blinding. Case in point:

Say goodbye to Jason Bay and hello to Mike Cameron.

Now sit down, because guess who has contacted Bay? Yes, the Yankees.

QUOTE The Red Sox last night agreed to terms with Cameron on a two-year deal, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. Multiple reports pegged the deal at roughly $15.5 million.

The acquisition of the 36-year-old former Gold Glover likely means the end of Bay’s short tenure in Boston, though a baseball source last night said the Sox have yet to inform him he’s no longer in their plans.

--snip--

Wherever Bay ends up, it’s almost certainly not going to be Boston. His replacement, Cameron, has said he’s willing to shift from center to left despite playing only three games there in his career. Adding him to Jacoby Ellsbury in center and J.D. Drew in right would give the Red Sox outstanding outfield defense.

Cameron hit 24 homers in ’09 for the Brewers. The lifetime .250 hitter is nowhere near as productive as Bay, though he’s nowhere near as expensive.

He certainly isn't as expensive. As for productive ... Well, that depends on how you define "productive."

Over the last two seasons, Cameron produced 8.4 wins above replacement.

Over those same two seasons, Bay produced 6.4 wins above replacement.

The Red Sox are going to pay Cameron roughly half of what someone's going to pay Jason Bay.

We try to make these things so complicated. But they're not, really. The Red Sox have figured out how to simplify everything. And I just can't wait to read all the columns in the Boston newspapers questioning Theo Epstein's intelligence and ownership's commitment to winning ...

Maybe, but Ellsbury is kind of an overvalued commodity. Excellent speed and defense (though Fuld probably will never come close to 70 steals maybe ever), and he actually has had a couple of decent OBP seasons, but other than that he could be replaced. On a very good time though, he's fine. On ours, I'm not so sure.

If that's why you think I want Sam Fuld as our centerfielder, you're way off.

Doug Dascenzo couldn't take a walk to save his life while he was coming through the minor leagues. It's a shit comparison. I told PCB last night that I thought Fuld could put up a .240 AVG/.350 OBP as half of a centerfield platoon. That's a completely realistic comparison given Fuld's ability to get on base in the minors. I don't really see Byrd doing that much better in terms of getting on base and Fuld is a superior defender. So, the Cubs save some money for a potential mid-season move and get similar production. Hell, come mid season there may be a center fielder available.

I do not want to get hamstrung by a Marlon Byrd contract. It's lunacy to pay as much money as he's going to command.

Those are some very Fuldesque numbers from 85-88 for little Dougie.

I stand corrected. I looked at something that showed a ~.295 AVG and a ~.315 OBP in the minors. Not sure how that happened.

So, I'm guessing you're on the Marlon Byrd bandwagon?

I'm not really enamored by any of the CF options out there. I fear that Byrd will be overpaid, and also that he won't perform as he did in Texas, just like Milton. Anyway, I won't be upset if we sign him for 2 years and under 8 mil per season. Then again, this is Hendry so I'm prepared for the worst.

I just wanted to point out that those Dascenzo numbers are very Ellsburyesque as well. More so than Fuldesque really.

I don't think I need to explain my point.

I agree with you Cigar. Cameron was our best bet and he's no longer available. I think on our roster hitting #6 he would have been pretty solid.
