No wonder we didn't sign him.

Damn, that's a head scratcher. I'd have been pissed if we did the same deal. Maybe for 1 year, but for 2 years is too much for a guy that old. I guess the lack of OF options really shot up his value. So who plays CF in Boston? My guess is Cameron plays LF, Ellsbury in CF, and Drew in RF. Boston offense has also taken a hit unless they are able to obtain Adrian Gonzalez, which I expect them to do. They replaced Bay with Cameron and are trading Lowell.

Maybe Milton will become a little more value as the decent FA OFers are snapped up.

Go into firesale mode? I'm sure the Angels would trade for Z over Lowe, and Lee, Lilly, Aramis would be valuable commodities.

If you would have posted this a month a go I'd be on board. Although teams are really hanging on to their prospects these days. I don't think we'd get close to fair value on most of our assets.

Yeah, I don't really think we should go into firesale mode at the moment. I guess our best hope is like Clapp says, hope guys return to their career averages and hope Soriano and Soto rebound. I'm interested to see what we do at the deadline (whether we're in contention or not).

EDIT: Good call on teams being stingy with 'spects, too. I hadn't thought about that.

Shit, now would expect Holliday to resign with the Cards.

Hopefully, the Yankees will go after him before Matt decides to resign.

Shit, I hadn't thought of that. Now we have to hope the M's steal Bay from the Mets (doubtful), and the Wilpons pony up for Holliday (also doubtful).

Yep, only now I just hope we don't sign Byrd to some atrocious contract as a result.

Cards reportedly have offered Holliday 8 years at around 16 million per... so 8/128.

So ... are they throwing in the towel on locking up Pujols long-term, or are they going to have those two, and then filler?

Not saying that's a bad strategy, as it has worked for them before.

You guys realize what a complete and total freak out would have occurred on this board if Hendry had given the EXACT same contract to Cameron, right? People would be screaming from the rafters about how no one in their right mind would give a 37 year old a 2 year contract, and how almost 8 million a year is 3 million more than anyone else would have given him. Then I would have asked how you guys have any idea what other teams offered him, and 4 of you would have accused me of blowing Hendry.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

And if the Cruds offer Holliday and 8 year contract I will be so happy. Holliday is a bit of a fraud in my mind. He has extreme splits from when he was with Colorado and wasn't all that good in Oakland. He got absurdly hot for 3 months and now he's getting MVP money. This will come back to bite the Cards in the ass.

Here is an exerpt from Rob neyer's article at ESPN.com

Neyer's Blog

QUOTE Hmmm, let's see here ... eight years, roughly $130 million (so far), an opt-out clause and "full no-trade protection" ... Gee, there's no way this won't work out beautifully for the club, huh?

Seriously, this is why baseball men shouldn't be allowed to watch baseball games. Because sometimes they actually believe what they're seeing. Holliday is an excellent baseball player. He is not the player everyone saw playing for the Cardinals last August and September. He is not the player whose batting line in those months was exactly as good as Albert Pujols'.

In fairness, I do believe the Cardinals know that Holliday isn't as good as Pujols. But if these figures being bandied about are correct, it seems they think Holliday is nearly as good as Pujols.

He's not. There's a top tier of superstars, a tier that includes Pujols and Joe Mauer and Chase Utley and Hanley Ramirez.

There's a second tier that includes Evan Longoria and Ryan Zimmerman and Chone Figgins.

And then comes Holliday and Kevin Youkilis and Carl Crawford.

It's not that Holliday's not worth $16 million. He is. Quite a bit more, in fact. It's that Holliday's not worth $130 million. It's just too much risk for too many years, with too few escape hatches, for a team that doesn't play in the Bronx.

I understand why the Cardinals believe they have to keep Pujols, no matter the cost. But do they really have to take the same approach with a third-tier superstar like Holliday? I mean, no matter the cost?
