Every year for the next 7 years, the Yankees could cut everyone on their team except ARod and CC and probably still trump 5-6 team payrolls.

Well sure, but Lilly was barely a .500 pitcher when he signed, coming off a decent year with a mid 4 era and a career high in wins. Lucky for us he was just entering his prime. He's the exception to the rule.
