What does Miles have on Lou and Jim?
QUOTE (KBwsb @ Aug 12 2009, 02:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Eh, Jody, I suppose you're right. I come off sounding like a deeply bitter man.

I can see why some of you would like to forget about Jim's off-season boner. I would too. If DeRosa was quietly having a decent season for the Indians instead of blasting homers for our arch-rivals, I suppose the blunder would be easier to take.

It's kind of unrealistic for people to expect the DeRo talk to cease, however. How long did Red Sox fans talk about the scuttling of Babe Ruth? My dad talked about Lou Brock for decades. A bad trade never goes away.

But at least for me, I'll try to shut up about it for now.
I'd be remiss, however, to not applaud Butch's recent outstanding post.

did you just compare derosa to ruth and brock?

As always, I used to most famous examples to use an analogy, not to identically compare them. But thanks for spinning the wheel. Next!

A stupid trade is a stupid trade.

That's bullshit. You're comparing apples and oranges and saying "they're both fruit!"

I didn't like the DeRosa trade, but 5 years from now, nobody's even going to remember it.

Babe Ruth?? Lou Brock?? Ok, we've gone completely nuts now. I don't care about the trade anymore.

Easily imaginable scenario: The Cubs finish 1 or 2 games behind the Cardinals, and miss the playoffs completely. DeRosa continues doing what he's doing for St. Louis, and we continue to miss him.

It will most certainly be remembered. Is the Alex Gonzalez error remembered? Is the Neifi contact remembered? Cringe-worthy things tend to linger, in a bad way.

Yeah...all it will take is for the Cards to win the division and us to miss the Wild Card and the DeRosa trade will be remembered for quite some time (not to say that it would be entirely due to DeRosa, but that's how people will remember it).

In that scenario I'm sure I'll remember it as one piece of an ill-fated season but it won't rank anywhere near in significance with the injuries, the offense and the bullpen.

Many people will tie the two much closer together because DeRosa ended up on the Cards.

See, this is the problem with you sometimes KB. EVERY move you don't agree with is a "boner" on par with the Ruth or Brock trades. They aren't. You know what? Not signing Furcal wasn't the same thing as trading Brock (2 bad seasons and one fairly good one). Drafting Tyler Colvin was not the same as trading Brock (there are roughly 4 guys who are demonstrably better than Colvin who were drafted after him in the first round, none of them are stars yet, and only one, Drabek, can even hope to be one). Trading DeRosa wasn't the same as trading Ruth. Even if everything you and Butch have said was right. Which it wasn't.

You could try not clicking on it. Failing that, you could try not clicking on reply, then replying to it. If that doesn't work, then I guess I can't help you.

I don't see why people are still bashing this trade. DeRosa is having a decent year and he's a pretty good player, but he's entering the final year of his contract and he's definitely regressed in some areas (look at his K rates, his K/BB, his LD%, and his wOBA, all of which are worse than last season). His power production has lifted an otherwise mediocre season.

But the Cubs got pitching depth. They traded away 1 year of service for many years of service. Stevens has already made it to the majors and has pitched well between the big leagues and AAA. He'll be likely be a pen arm for the next few years. Gaub has been great between AA and AAA and might crack the major league roster this season. It's looking like he will also be in the bullpen for a while as a LOOGY. Even if Chris Archer doesn't make the major league team, the Cubs have traded away 1 year of service for quite a few more.

I don't mind the DeRosa trade, but I do mind the way Hendry bungled every subsequent move last offseason. Aaron Miles was a joke from the beginning.

I'm assuming this post was tongue-in-cheek, correct BT? Please tell me you're being facetious.

I can see tom saying "KB thinks DeRosa is better than Babe Ruth!" because he's purposely trying to be an asshole, and he knows how preposterous his statement is, and he knows I'll chuckle, or get mad, or whatever.

But you actually sound serious. You're implying that I said that Mark DeRosa is the greatest player in the history of the sport, equal to Babe Ruth...that's what you're saying?
Uh-huh. Good one.

Is that really the best you can do, pretend that I said DeRosa is as good as Babe Ruth, and try to defend the Tyler Colvin draft pick? Weak sauce.
BTW, that's truly the last refuge of someone who's losing an argument: make outlandish, clearly absurd misrepresentations of what the other guy is saying, and turn the whole thing into a cartoon. (That's why I think you might be being facetious, because IMO, you weren't necessarily losing the argument; it was just a difference of opinion.)
