Minor League Roundup
QUOTE (KBwsb @ Apr 29 2009, 03:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Neyer doesn't agree with me as per Fox:

QUOTE Garrett Hawk, Nashville, TN: The Cubs are getting nothing out of Derrek Lee, and Jake Fox (AAA 1st baseman) is currently the hottest hitter in the entire minor leagues. I don't think Fox is going to have a long, productive career, but as a quick fix, shouldn't the Cubs go with the hot hand?

Rob Neyer: Not unless there's something physically wrong with Lee.

And I finally agree with Neyer.

By the way, Bob said Lee wasn't moving all that well in warmups and Lee couldn't make a play he usually would make on a bunt. Not serious, but maybe the Cubs rushed him back too soon. Lee's always going to try and convince Lou that he's fine, but they should take a closer look at that and make sure he's 100%.

T. Miller (Las Vegas): The Cubs trade of Mark DeRosa has been highly criticized. I still think they should have traded Derrek Lee and kept DeRosa. However, I've been tracking the 3 pitching prospects the Cubs recieved in the trade, Chris Archer, John Gaub, and Jeff Stevens. Stevens is yet to give up a run in Triple A in 8 innings, Archer has a 1.59 ERA through 17 innings, and Gaub has a 1.59 ERA for the double A team. Is there a chance that the Cubs new more about these prospects then everyone else when they made the trade? Any upside here?

Ben Badler: I do like the aggressive promotion of Gaub to Double-A to see what they have, which right now looks like an interesting reliever. Archer walks too many batters for that ERA to be sustainable. Stevens is another guy who needs to throw more strikes, but he's close to the big leagues. The trade is still better for Cleveland. If it all works out for the Cubs, they end up with a couple of big league relievers.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Barney has 6 errors already? Yikes. I thought the glove was his calling card.

While it's true that Archer has walked a lot of batters in his career, he also strikes out a ton (8.4 Ks/9 in his MiLB career). If he can avoid becoming Donnie Veal, he could be a dominant MLB starter. The last two games he's pitched, he's kept the walks down. I hope that's a trend we'll keep seeing.

Is Veal still starting w the O's?

If by "starting w the O's" you mean "in the pen for the Pirates", then yep, he sure is. He's only appeared in two games thus far, though.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

He's with the Pirates, and he has a 6.00 era in 3 IP, including 7 BB.

I think KB could have been referring to Rich Hill. And no he is not in the starting rotation for them.

Yup. Rich Hill is still "rehabbing" his shoulder.

And then he'll return to the Pirates bullpen.

You know what's weird? I completely forgot about Rich Hill until just now. I was even thinking about how Chris Young led off game 3 of the 2007 NLDS with a home run while we were playing the D-Backs, but I didn't remember who the pitcher was. It was as if I just purged his memory from my brain.

I can't wait til Hill gets called up and his first pitch hits the press box.

Rich Hill (elbow) gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings Wednesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Norfolk.
Gregor Blanco hit a two-run homer off him, but everything else was encouraging. He allowed no other hits, walked just one and struck out five. 42 of his 62 pitches were strikes. Hill is expected to make at least three more rehab starts before coming off the DL.

Yeah I saw that, still not buying it until he steps on a major league mound.
