So can we sign Harper now?

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

This is the off-season from hell.

FWIW, this is from a Tribune article on the pairing:  "The Cubs have said Sinclair will have nothing to do with content, just distribution. Programming will come from the team’s in-house Cubs Productions."  I wasn't concerned that the bullshit that Sinclair pulls with respect to the networks that it owns in terms of their news programming wasn't going to be an issue for this channel, but this seems to confirm that.

But now I am forced to grapple with the fact that the same distributor of disgusting propaganda will be distributing Cubs content. Money from my pocket going into their pocket. I am having a really hard time with all of this.

Joe Ricketts/Sinclair is not a coincidence.

"But Daddy, think of how we can bankroll your political shenanigans. Can we pleeeeeease have the Cubs?"

I mean, I get the idea, but you go down a worm hole.  You don't know the politics of .1% of the people to whom you pay money, directly or indirectly, and more often than not you wouldn't like their politics if you did. Unless you're going to move to a commune and live off subsistence farming, this is going to happen.

I'm certainly not going to pay money to someone for the express purpose of pushing a political agenda I don't like, but I can't do much about it if it happens indirectly.  Hell, I pay a shit ton in federal taxes that I'm not feeling really good about for the last few years.

This feels different to me, though. Paying to watch/support the team is purely elective. I have to pay taxes, buy groceries, pay rent, etc. Choosing to pay for season tickets and buy Cubs merchandise is obviously not in the same category. If there was a movie that was funded by a far-right organization, I would absolutely not watch that movie. Is this any different? I don't ever order Papa John's (and not just because it's disgusting pizza), but because of the racist shitbag who runs the company. Should I continue to support the Cubs because I grew up going to games, my kids grew up going to games, it's a huge part of who I am and ignore the inconvenient truth of who owns the team? Well...that's what I have to consider now. Because it isn't an innocuous choice to me anymore. Do I rob myself and my kids of the experience of going to ballgames in the summer because I don't want the Ricketts family to have any more of my money?

Fuck the Ricketts for making me even have to think about this shit. Baseball is supposed to be one of my escapes from the political hellscape that exists today; not part of it.

Yeah, well sometimes you do know. I don't got to Hobby Lobby, Chick-Fil-A, etc. Joe Ricketts is worse. Sinclair is an order of magnitude worse. Cubs baseball is a product offered up by some truly reprehensible business entities. I cannot enrich them.

Butch slipped in with the verbose version.
