From what I read today,they wont take over until Feb. 2010 so I'm not giving up my small glimmer of hope that a deal can get done once the Cubs ownership gets settled.

Yes but the entire reason the current owner wanted to cut payroll and thus deal Peavy was due to financial obligations stemming from a messy divorce. That all goes away with him now standing to make hundreds of millions on the sale of the team.

Obviously there is always a chance but it's far less likely he gets dealt now.

Less likely, sure, but ask Peavy if he wants to wait around for the rebuilding process to bear fruit. They aren't close to winning, not now or in the next couple seasons unless the front office cleans house and restocks the farm system. It's really difficult to tell a player that he is going to be dealt, get 90% into a rebuilding process, change course again, and then act as though the front office is going to turn things around like they once were and maintain a competitive payroll. Keeping Peavy around, whether the new owner can afford to or not, doesn't help their bottom line or convince the fans that it's a good investment to buy season tickets. It would make very little sense to hold onto him now as a token gesture. They need to finish what they started.

Padres resigned Prior to a minor league, non-guaranteed contract. He'll make $1m if he makes the major league roster at any point in the season, and if recent history is any indication, there's little chance of that happening.

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the Dodgers are expected to officialy release Andruw Jones Thursday morning.

Jones, you'll remember, agreed to defer the $21.1MM remaining on his contract back in early January to open up payroll for the Dodgers, and for a chance at a fresh start with a new team. The Dodgers have reportedly discussed a few potential trades this week, but all talks have apparently fallen flat. Well it wasn't a free agent deal, they are just taking care of arbitration years all at once so they don't have to do it every year. Still if he stays healthy he surely would have made more had he gone year to year, but this is his first year making more than like 400K, so its probably nice for him to know he is set for life now no matter what.

Jocketty said the free agents market is as quiet as it appears to be.

"Talking to other teams, everyone's waiting," he said. "Times are tight with the economy. Everybody's being very cautious. Things have been slow with season-ticket and advertising renewals."
