I'm just glad she's back on our side. I don't know what that tweet means, but anything she says/does makes me smile.

Yeah, the Cubs should totally consult with ALL the South Side aldermen before deciding on how to structure their next TV deal. No wonder local politics are such a fucking mess.

A powerful alderman on Wednesday called on the Chicago Cubs not to pursue plans to create their own cable network, saying the move would shut out many of the team's loyal fans from being able to watch games on TV.

Southwest Side Ald. Edward Burke laid out three arguments on behalf of his resolution, which carries only symbolic value: Cubs fans stuck by the team through many lean years before the 2016 World Series championship. The City Council already approved plans to allow the Cubs' owners, the Ricketts family, to add massive video boards to generate more advertising revenue at historic Wrigley Field. And the team recently raised ticket prices, making it more expensive for fans to attend games.

Many Cubs games already air on cable via Comcast SportsNet Chicago, but the resolution contends a Cubs-owned station could make things worse because it would likely be part of a more expensive premium cable package.

After introducing the resolution, Burke acknowledged the council can't force the Cubs not to take this lucrative step but hinted the team should consider how such a move would be viewed by aldermen the next time the team comes to the City Council asking for zoning changes or other help.

"We can urge, but they, I'm sure, are going to be coming back here in the future, and it's something to be considered," said Burke, 14th.

The Cubs have indicated the organization may seek to start its own network after their current TV contract lapses in 2020, given the lucrative deals teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers have signed. The sports media landscape is rapidly changing with the rise of tablets, smartphones and cable cord-cutting, however.

Cubs spokesman Julian Green pointed to the benefits the team brings to the city, and noted that other clubs have their own channels.

"The team has been creating hundreds of jobs, generating taxes for the city and revenue streams to support our own nearly $800 million investment and our championship organization," Green said in a statement. "Frankly, it's unfathomable to be threatened with suggestions that the city would deprive us of rights other teams enjoy and in so doing limit our ability to support ourselves."

I'm sure the Cubs will carefully consider his opinions...
