Yeah, it may be long overdue, but they have to keep evolving as an organization. Plus, Theo isn't sticking around past 2021, so might as well at least have the pieces in place for whatever comes next.

I don't see Theo hanging around beyond 10 years, and he hasn't wavered from that sentiment in multiple interviews that he's given since he signed his extension. This isn't a minority opinion.

I heard him say something recently that waivered a bit from the 10 year thing. It was a few weeks back, that Score interview right before Maddon was axed. As I recall he said 10 years wasn't a hard and fast number, it was more about the sentiment/concept.

If news doesn't break today that the Cubs have hired a manager, with a press conference tomorrow, doesn't that mean no announcement until after the World Series?

 

If so, doesn't that put a thumb on the scale for Espada?  If the hire is going to be Ross, why wait?

Yeah, I would have to imagine that's the case.  There is zero reason not to announce.  Honestly, given what's been reported on Espada, he seems much more in line with this FO.  From things that Ross has said in his broadcasts, it sounds like he's much more traditional in his views.  Also, I know it's not a HUGE factor, but I really think having a Spanish speaking manager/Latino is an asset.
