I put together my thoughts on losing DeRosa and adding Miles at Bleacher Nation. Read if you're interested, but also I would appreciate any thoughts you guys might have on my writing style/what's included/etc. I kind of put a lot of thought into it.

Awesome! Thanks Clapp. And you better believe that when BN actually starts getting a readership, a spotlight on the Thigh is forthcoming.

DeRosa says the two years in Chicago were the best of his career and doesn't understand why he was traded but knows it's a part of the game. He said some of his favorite memories were just playing beanbags with the neighbors and drinking some beers. I'm sure it'll be on SportsNite again later tonight.

Ace, I'm amazed that the bleacher nation domain name was available. Oh, and the article was good as well. Where do you find the time to keep up with all of this stuff?

My wife is very unsatisfied. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]
And yeah, I couldn't believe that name wasn't taken. It's something I've wanted to do for a while, and now that I've kind of gotten what I do at the Brickyard down to a science, I figured it was time to try the serious thing. It's a lot of work (particularly when combined with this place), but I enjoy it.

Yeah, Ace, you captured what I've been thinking since the trade happened almost perfectly. I guess it remains to be seen, but if our opening day team is left as is, the offseason will be a failure IMO. I guess there's still that chance that we can add another player in midseason, but I won't get my hopes up.

So now we're keeping track of Ace's BM's? Good one, bad one, who knows.

Hendry on the DeRosa trade:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->"I remember when we signed DeRosa [on Nov. 14, 2006] and there was more second-guessing about that than anything," Hendry said. "Mark's a terrific guy and he was a good player for us. But the thinking in the winter was that we already had five right-handed hitters penciled in that weren't going anywhere. And we were concerned with how [Kosuke] Fukudome was going to come back [as a left-handed power hitter]. ... If he hadn't come back well and we kept Mark, we were probably looking at seven out of eight right-handed hitters every day in the lineup. Then we would have that issue again."
DeRosa, who is being paid $5.5 million this season, hit .285 with 21 homers and 87 RBIs for the Cubs last season.
<b>"Nobody likes to lose a guy like [DeRosa]," said Hendry. "But there wasn't anywhere else to get left-handed, you know.</b> And over time, I think we will see that we got pretty good guys for him. So we mixed and matched some of the dollars that were made with [DeRosa] and other guys who are not here, and added the guys that we did."
One of the added guys was free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley. Hendry also dealt pitcher Jason Marquis and cash to Colorado in exchange for pitcher Luis Vizcaino, who subsequently was released. The Cubs agreed to pay $875,000 of Marquis' $9.875 million salary for 2009. He is 6-3 with a 4.45 ERA. The Cubs also declined to re-sign closer Kerry Wood, who signed with Cleveland.
"Some of the moves work out right away and some of them take a little time to work out," Hendry said. "And sometimes they don't work. It's just part of the gig."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Sounds like it really wasn't about money after all, but more about trying to appease Lou to get more left handed bats in the lineup.

No surprises there. And not to beat a dead horse, but how could Hendry not anticipate that guys like Bradley and Aramis would miss time due to injury? Sounds like a pretty naive leap of faith to me. DeRosa was our full-time backup IF/OF, not our full-time 2B. Just like Dusty in 2005-06, Lou has had too much control over the roster. Either Hendry has lost all control or he never deserved it in the first place. He left the roster thin in so many places, it's ridiculous.
