Fukubyebye?

Not implying that Fuk is a problem but trading him for salary relief/decent prospects could definitely be part of the overall solution for 2011. 2010 is a pretty much a lost cause

If he wasn't making so much, he wouldn't be a problem at all as a platoon player. All things considered, he is a waste of a roster spot, that would be better served on another team.

Fuk has to get significant starts until he can be dealt. If he's made a bench player it just depresses his value further.

The more he plays and inevitably sees his numbers decline from month-to-month, that depresses his value even further than that.

Every GM in baseball already knows that the Cubs need to dump Fukodome. Even if he starts every game and pulls his battiing average up to the .300+ range, adds 5 HR, and he cures cancer, we're still not going to get much for him and we're not going to get anything but (at absolute BEST) 50% salary relief. It doesn't matter. Fukodome isn't starting as much because Colvin needs playing time, not because Fukodome is sucking ass (though his BA over the last months has dipped).

It's like trying to trade Milton Bradley... when everyone knows you MUST make a trade, you get offers like (a) you pay 80% of his salary and we'll take him for a PTBNL, ( take an expensive one-dimensional player (Burrell) and pay us the salary difference, or take on an even more cumbersome contract that looks even more hopeless. JH spun shit into gold that time... maybe he can do it again with Fukodome. But I maintain his starting time, or lack thereof, has not much bearing on the situation. If us knuckle-heads here know Fukodome's not starting to get Colvin at-bats', I think every MLB franchise has a scouting department that can tell them the same things we know, too.

I agree - trade him now and give Colvin the playing time!

Is he overpaid? Yes
Is he a problem? No
Will trading him for nothing while paying most of his salary be a good idea? Doubt it

That's assuming we get nothing in return and the salary relief won't matter. Otherwise, all we have is an expensive bench player.

If the sole benefit is more starts for Colvin, that's not good enough. If we get something and meaningful salary relief then it's worth it.

Well it doesnt appear that people are beating down the door to trade for him, if the reports are correct.

Am I the only one not completely sold on Colvin yet?

Oh, I'm not even close to being sold on Colvin either, but it's clear that Fuk has no future here. I'd rather see if Colvin fails and give him every opportunity to do so than go with Fuk's disappearing act for another year, when that does nothing to help plan for the future. I don't think anyone is advocating just dumping him for nothing.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Why? He's doing so well in his first season with only 120 something at bats against favorable matchups after having a marginal minor league career after a hot spring training. I mean...we have such a good track record with minor leaguers...why wouldn't you be sold on him?
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

Define "sold on." Do you mean as a certain future starter for years and years? If so, then I agree.

If "sold on" just means that he's a MLB caliber player - starter or otherwise - then I'm definitely sold.

I guess my "sold on" means he'll be an above-average corner OFer. We're set at his spot and don't have to worry about trading or signing someone at his position. That sort of thing.

If "sold on" means he could be a fine 4th OFer, then I might be sold on him.
