Minor League Roundup - Giff - 07-21-2009

Julio Castillo goes on trial today for throwing a ball into the stands last year. If convicted on both accounts (felonious assault with a deadly weapon and felonious assault causing serious physical harm), he could get 16 years in prison. The dude made a mistake and deserves to be punished, but 16 years would be ridiculous.

Minor League Roundup - alpha - 07-21-2009

what makes it worse is popular and powerful people have gotten away with much worse....

Really? The guy threw the baseball with the intent of hurting someone and you think 16 years is too much? It wasn't some 10 year old kid throwing the ball, this was a guy that can throw 90 miles per hour. He could have killed someone. I don't care what happens to this guy.

Well he wasn't actually trying to throw the ball into the stands. Is this really all that different than the Ben Christensen incident, which actually did hurt someone? He didn't go to jail.

He was trying to throw the ball at the opposing dugout. He should be punished for being a pitcher and missing his target by 5 feet.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yes, 16 years is way too much, that's completely ridiculous. People spend less time in jail for crimes like rape and manslaughter. Like Giff said it was stupid and dangerous and he deserves to be punished, but they are trying to make an example of him, which is bullshit. I have no problem with him going to jail for a while but 16 years for throwing a baseball in a brawl is crazy.

Yeah there is a chance he could of killed someone, but what are the odds? Every time a drunk driver gets in a car they could kill someone too, but people with DUI's don't go to jail for 16 years.

Shit, Donte Stallworth killed a guy while driving drunk and he got 30 days in jail. I don't understand how anyone could think 16 years is even close to a reasonable punishment for this.

Minor League Roundup - Runnys - 07-22-2009

I didn't say it was fair that he could get 16 years, it isn't. But that is the problem with our legal system sometimes. This guy is going to likely get a lot more time than someone like Stallworth because he doesn't have the money or recognition. Again, it isn't fair and he is being made an example of. Still doesn't change the fact that he threw the ball to try and hurt someone. Honestly, any rapist, murderer, or person who has killed someone while driving drunk should rot in jail the rest of their lives. It is a damn shame that they don't.
