Maybe Wilken's strength is in the lower rounds, were he can sniff out good, solid players where others can't.

Maybe, like the majority of good talent evaluators, he missed on a pick in the first round but all together will produce good talent.

A guy misses on a pick in the first round, I wouldn't hold it against him. Most draft boards are essentially the same: the same dozen guys are in everybody's top ten, the same 35-40 guys are in everybody's first round, etc.
And this is exactly why the Colvin pick was such bullshit. According to most teams and scouts, he was a 3rd or 4th rounder. According to Keith Law, who used to work for Wilken in the Blue Jay system, most scouts had Colvin as a 4th or 5th round guy.
Baseball America ranked him 172nd on that year's draft board.
The Cubs took him 13th overall.
Fucking stupid pick. Period.
(btw, this isn't a rag against you Scarey. I like your take on baseball. It's not even a rag on Wilken, who has probably done a pretty good job, all around. It's a blast on a completely stupid decision, made for all the wrong reasons, that has, predictably, turned out as badly as everyone thought it would).

Clapp, I think the point was that EVERY team had Luke Hochevar as a top 5 pick. It surprised <i>nobody</i> when he was picked. It just didn't work out.

The scouts know a ton more about these players than the so called experts do, it's not basketball or football where you have a limited field of players to analyze.

Colvin, however, was a no brainer - in the third or fourth round. If you draft him there and he flops, no big deal. If you draft him thirteenth overall and he flops, that's a much worse pick than Hochevar at one.

They're all significant gambles. The Cubs felt they saw something in him and took a chance. There's 5-10 guys every first round in MLB that are "2nd-5th round" guys that teams take. The scouts know a ton more about these players than the so called experts do, it's not basketball or football where you have a limited field of players to analyze.

I don't disagree with that. I'm just saying Colvin at 13 that year was a much bigger gaffe than Hochevar at 1, no matter how badly Hochevar turns out.

And this is exactly why the Colvin pick was such bullshit. According to most teams and scouts, he was a 3rd or 4th rounder. According to Keith Law, who used to work for Wilken in the Blue Jay system, most scouts had Colvin as a 4th or 5th round guy.
Baseball America ranked him 172nd on that year's draft board.
The Cubs took him 13th overall.
Fucking stupid pick. Period.

The problem is, you're basically making a blanket statement about Wilken based on one pick. I'm not trying to say the guy is a stupendous talent evaluator with a few mistakes on his record. All I'm saying is it's too early to judge him either way based on what he's done with the Cubs, especially if it's just the one pick you're judging him off of.
