This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Quote: Good grief, Kid. I didn't make that comparison. You guys and the inference. A better comp--but far from perfect, considering years of eligibility for starters--would the Montgomery deal. I'm just pointing out that other teams are taking a tack that recognizes that you can get value from trading for relief pitchers without offering a mint. I'll stop making the point. I'm sure it's annoying when I note every RP who gets traded from a non-Yankee team. It's just one of those things where I'm surprised my opinion doesn't coincide someone else on this board. Misery loves company and all that rot. </div> </blockquote> Slaw, I agree that we gave up too much for Chapman (not Montgomery). But I feel that we kinda need to do that to improve our chances to win a World Series.

My issue with that description is with the term "too much," which is a relative term. If you characterize "too much" as more than you would have liked to have paid, I agree. If you characterize it as more than the market demanded, I disagree. Assuming the former, I think reasonable people can differ over whether this was worth the price, given that it was what the market demanded.

If you characterize it as more than the market demanded, I disagree. Assuming the former, I think reasonable people can differ over whether this was worth the price, given that it was what the market demanded. That is the thing to remember. The market price was high. Hell, look what Cleveland just gave up for Miller. Yes, I know Miller still has two years left on his contract so its a little different. But, Cleveland gave up their 1st round picks from 13 and 14 for Miller. Plus, Frazier is at AAA and on the verge of being ready. The Cubs gave up a guy that is still at least 2 years away. The price for stud late inning relievers is high. Its the price of doing business. I also would like to say that whether you like the trade or not, you can't deny it has solidified our bullpen. Take last night for example. Without that trade we are looking at Richard pitching at some point in that game instead of Chapman. Think about that for a second.

Assuming the former, I think reasonable people can differ over whether this was worth the price, given that it was what the market demanded. Historically speaking, the price was too high. But markets fluctuate, and it appears there are more buyers than sellers in this market. The only player I'm concerned with letting go was Torres. And if we had control of Chapman for another year that wouldn't have bothered me. Giving away a top 50 prospect for 30ish innings of performance is insane. However, those 30 innings could likely determine whether we win a fucking World Series or not. So I understand it. The front office is going for it and I can respect that. THIS IS THE YEAR!

I didn't buy a house until 2008, when the market went down. Why? Because houses cost too much before then (they still do). "What the market demands" can be used to justify a lot of foolish behavior; it is nonetheless foolish behavior.
EDIT: All this said, I do get that the Cubs are "selling out" (although they still have an impressive stockpile) for a WS. If they win it, of course, I won't give a damn about it.

You are not able to push pause and wait for trade prices to fall while you're in contention to win a World Series,

Got it. Acquiring a player only (slightly) improves my chances to getting to a series, let alone winning it.

It amazes me that Rich Hill is still around, much less a significant trade target.
