It's completely irrelevant, but I suppose this saves the Cubs a tiny amount of money.  They pay him his contract this year minus whatever he gets from another team.  As far as I know, the Marlins have to pay him termination pay equal to the league minimum, and now the Padres are paying him a prorated amount of the league minimum.
