MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Colon resigns with Mets for 1 year deal $7.25 MM.

Anyone willing to wager an O/U on his weight to start spring training?  Guessing around 310 to start camp - maybe 340 by end of season.

For a team that is lacking offense, it boggles my mind why they would use the money they saved with Cuddyers retirement on bartolo colon at 7.25 million a year. If I was a Mets fan, I'd be pissed!

So the White Sox traded 3 of their top 15 prospects for a guy with a .309 obp? Sounds about right.

Anyone else listen to Frank Thomas on The Score yesterday around 4:30? He said it was a bad idea for the Cubs to give Heyward that sort of contract, considering he's a guy that doesn't hit 30 homeruns or drives in 100 RBI.

I don't think Frank realizes there's more to it than just power numbers, and that Heyward wasn't brought into Chicago to drive in runs. Looking at Frank's career, it doesn't surprise that all he thinks about it RBIs and HRs, while ignoring things like defense or baserunning...which were things he sucked at.

I just tend to ignore bitter former players, especially former Sox guys who live in a bubble and cozy up to Pete Rose.

Anyway this will take a while to get used to.

Thomas isn't the only one saying it. It seems that most of he analysts are saying it. They've said that Heyward is really the first big FA that got his contract based off using sabermetrics. It's not just Thomas. A lot of them say it was too much. A lot of them also say it was too much especially if we are taking him out of his best position. The thing I find humorous though is that these people that are saying him in CF is a bad idea are the exact same people that keep preaching that it's only the middle of December so it's not time to panic about teams. But, I understand it is their job, but, MLB radio has been hard to listen to the last week or so. Casey Stern seems to be the loudest about how Heyward isn't worth it.

I don't think Heyward is going to be a 30/100 guy, but, aside from injury I don't see any reason he can't consistently be 20/80.

I also don't think Heyward will be our opening day CF.

Casey Stern is a dipshit Mets fan who says almost as many dumb things as Jim Bowden, only he doesn't have the experience to back it up.

Plus, I realize it's a lot of money, but odds are he's only going to see 3 years of this contract ($80-$90 million), right? If he even plays half way decent I would think he'll opt out. The only way I see the Cubs paying that entire contract if he's hurt or turns into the next Soriano.

I'm not losing any sleep over what the "experts" are saying about the deal to be honest.

virtually everything Thomas said was fully of dipshittery. You'll note in the same interview he was saying the Sox should give Gordon 25 million a year. He hit 13 home runs last year.

I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

And he's 5+ years older and only plays LF.
