Why do you say that?

Are kids playing baseball for fun anymore these days like our generation and those before ours did? And even when you factor in organized play, the sport ranks something like 5th after football, soccer, basketball and hockey in terms of total numbers for kids 14 and under. Baseball is a difficult game to learn compared to others, so if kids aren't playing it, they most likely aren't watching it either. Is my perception wrong? I was mostly kidding about the PEDs, mostly.

I actually think you're right, sadly. When the fuck did soccer and hockey become so popular? Hockey should be harder to make inroads. It's way more expensive and requires learning to skate really well. And it's stupid. And fuck soccer, too.

Learning to skate well is very hard, but most kids will at least try it because it looks fun. The popularity of the Blackhawks has helped a lot locally. Baseball has a huge perception problem.

Baseball is still popular in the South. My son loves it and he says it's his favorite sport. That said, in my area, baseball is behind basketball, soccer, and football in popularity. Hockey is non existent, but lacrosse is taking off like crazy.

Winning of course is the best way to generate young interest in the Cubs again. It may never again compete neck and neck with football to the masses. But with far more games there are still plenty of opportunities for kids to get the bug like we all did. To some dgree many life long fans start out as band wagoners. No so much for those of you in or directly around Chicago, although for an impressionable Windy City youth there are other baseball options(kinda). But I'll admit '84 did it for me and I never looked back.
