MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
I'd like the one-game WC round a lot more if Piitsburgh overtook St. Louis.

Seems most of the old-school manager types are being shown the door at an increasing rate over the past few years.

I have to say, my argument that it would be difficult to fit a 3-game WC series into the schedule is hampered by the fact that the NL WC game isn't until Wednesday and that neither NLDS starts until Friday.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

They need to go to a 3-game format for a lot of reasons. One of which that I feel never gets mentioned is that it's incredibly unfair to have to throw an ace in a 1-game playoff then lose him in until Game 3 or possibly even Game 4 of the DS.

Here's how I'd do it...

Season ends on Sunday. (Though, you could actually perhaps move it up to Saturday. Would anyone really mind? Have the season end with 3-game series that go Thurs-Sat, with a two-game series before it for an off day.)

Tiebreaker day Monday.

3-game WC card series begins on Tuesday, with all three games at the home of the top wild card team, in three straight days. There needs to be a better reward for finishing ahead in the WC, because it's bullshit to beat WC #2 by 4 games and then have a one-game take all, regardless of venue. Have WC team #1 host them all, as it would eliminate travel days.

Start all four divisional series on Saturday, to avoid competing with the NFL in Game 1. This will allow WC teams to throw their ace in Game 1, on what would be 3 days rest. That's pretty normal in the playoffs. Plus, it would eliminate the discrepancy between off days. Some series start Thursday and other start Friday? That's ridiculous. Start them the same day, then play around with the off days afterwards to schedule for TV.

Using this year as a guide...here's how it would look. (NL/AL just for example, obviously it would be moved around for timezones that fit)

Sunday 9/28: End of regular season

Monday 9/29: Off day (no tiebreakers)

Tuesday 9/30: NL Wild Card Game 1 at 5 pm ET, AL Wild Card Game 1 at 8 pm ET

Wednesday 10/1: NL Wild Card Game 2 at 5 pm ET, AL Wild Card Game 2 at 8 pm ET

Thursday 10/2: NL Wild Card Game 3 at 5 pm ET, AL Wild Card Game 3 at 8 pm ET

Friday 10/3: Off day

Saturday 10/4: NLDS Game 1 at 1pm ET, ALDS Game 1 at 4pm ET, NLDS Game 1 at 7pm ET, ALDS Game 1 at 10pm ET

I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

Only issue is that it wouldn't be able to account for rainouts. And those are bound to happen in October.

Good post. I'd also really like to see a 3 game series. You truly need at least 3 games to even come close to determining the better team since even the best teams can have a bad or unlucky game.

I mentioned it...as a good thing. I think the WC teams should have long odds at success. I think the decision about how they'll use their ace should be difficult.

I agree 100% with straw on this. The added disadvantage for the WC teams is the point.
