40 man roster
#1
It currently sits with only 35 men on it, how do fill the 5 spots? Or do we just leave it as is for now?

Wow! That seems like an awful lot of empty spots....do most teams have that many open spots going into the season?

They're going to have to add a middle infielder to the 40 man. I think Andres Blanco will be on there. They might even go with two. Darwin Barney could be a dark horse just cause I've heard the Cubs like his glove.

A catcher needs to be added too. I'm thinking either Mark Johnson or Welington Castillo.

After that, some of the older pitchers like Fox or Kadokura could be on there and maybe one or two prospects added like Caridad, Wadell, Robnett or *gulp* Tyler Colvin.

Kadokura has already been released so it won't be him, and I don't see any incentive in adding guys like Fox, Blanco or Johnson until the day you really need them.

Caridad and Castillo seem pretty likely and Lou seemed to like Wadell too, so he wouldn't surprise me. I think we will probably keep at least one spot open just in case we need to purchase a contract of a vet like Fox or Blanco.

Somebody feel free to correct me, but I can't think of any reason they will go looking for guys to put on the 40-man. The guys that have been mentioned could be put on the 40-man when they are called up. All you are doing by putting guys on the roster now is using up an option year.

It's rare to only have 35 guys on it, but there's no requirement that there be more than that. Keeping it at 35 will give us flexibility to use up the vacant spots as needed (or if any trades are made).
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

Which there will be if Miles, Theriot, or Fontenot got hurt, or they need a backup 3b. I don't think they'd call somebody like Blanco over making a deal.

I wonder if the Cubs can make a significant pick up like Reed last year. Not likely but we may be able to add a decent piece.

Platoon partner for the aforementioned Reed Johnson?
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

I think the Cubs were hoping someone better than Blanco or Rivas would get dumped at the end of Spring Training. Regardless, if the Cubs are going to make a deal for another backup middle infielder, they better do it BEFORE one of those guys gets hurt.

The Cubs should trade for Brandon Wood. He can backup both SS and 3B and was once a can't miss prospect. He had a good spring and was demoted to Salt Lake yesterday. I have no idea if th Angels are even interested in trading him but that's a guy I'd likle to have.

His name is Fukudome. Whether you like him or not, that's his role.
